What have unicyclists done to promote and teach unicycling?
If we ever want to grow unicycling, then we need to convert more people into unicyclists.
Start a club! Offer free lessons!
The main problem with this is that if a unicyclist does not have any good beginner unicycles, or doesn’t want constant UPDs destroying their uni, then the learner has to buy their own unicycle.
I did this with the unicycle club at school, and I only got 2 members. But 2 members are still 2 new unicyclists.
Maybe the way to do this is charge people for lessons and provide a unicycle, and at some point they would want their own. This also would help with the ‘How to boost forum activity?’ thread.
Offer any suggestions down below.
I know at least 2 unicycling clubs with maybe 30 unicyclists nearby and there are a lot more unicyclists around. Noone is busy on the forum, although some have accounts. Not even the club leaders are here. There are indoor unicyclists an we are outdoor unicyclists. These two groups co-exist totally independently. I have been in both worlds, now I am outdoors.
Often unicycling clubs are more performance based. There are very few clubs that practice muni or street riding. Most clubs practice for parades and circuses… so most people assume that is what all unicycling clubs are. Thus fewer people wish to unicycle.
I was thinking more of teaching clubs, where new unicyclists could learn
I am a member of a unicycling club. We have a scheduled meeting/ride the first Saturday of every month. Periodically, new members will show up without their own unicycle. For those members, I have 6 unicycles that I provide as “loaners”. Another member has a couple as well. Outside of that monthly scheduled meeting, we will plan/post road and/or muni rides on our FB page.
The interest by new riders has been minimal in the past year.
