Sidehop record?
Ok, I have an interesting question. I saw that the world sidehop record was set by Kris Holm, and was 82 cm. I have seen this record many places. So, being confident, I set out exactly 3 feet on a tape measurer on the ground. I had 3 witnesses, and clearly jumped *before* the line, and landed after the tape measurer. Everyone who were watching from different angles agreed that it was no less than 3 feet, and if anything, just a fraction more. This calculates out to 91.44 cm, total sidehopping distance. Now, did I just break the world record here? Or is there something I missed? I quite clearly landed it, went completely sideways as a sidehop would dictate, I didn't even have a bounce before-hand, I just put weight onto the uni, and sprung off. Also, the seat was underneath me, not out in front. If someone could tell me the rules, and if I followed them, that would be appreciated. I'd like to get the facts straight before I celebrate!

misleading terminology
The length you've seen listed [and I gather no longer accurate even now, despite what Guinness says?] could be better described as the World Sidehop Height Record.

Lol. I knew something was wrong... You don't just beat Kris Holm at what he's the best in the world at. Yeah, that's why I posted it, I was sure I missed something. Is there a distance record too? I used to have a record link, but I lost it somehow along the way. Did he have the seat out in front when he accomplished his height record?

So that would be what? 2.9m? Where are you finding this information? The only place I looked said that the record was held by a 13 year old, who jumped 1.5m. I would also like to know the rules and standard for long jump as well. If there are updated record pages, what is the current record for the 16 year old age bracket?

You can do the long jump competition with any type jump. At NAUCC and UNICON we used a time-saving new method which is similar to how a regular long jump works. The jump-off point was marked, using one of the lines on the long jump track. Because we had two experienced (regular track) long jump judges, they were comfortable measuring by eye where the wheels landed. They marked off half-meter lines, to help you see where you were landing. Though they preferred to give everyone three tries, we left it at two tries so it would be similar to our other events (high jump, obstacle course, slow races). I think it was Zach Vaughan who did the 2.42, and I think he's 14 or so. I do not yet have a copy of the competition results, so that's just from memory. I think you are confusing this with the prior world high jump record, which was 82 or 83 cm. The new official UNICON high jump record is 87 cm, by Kris Holm. Kris also did a personal record (after completing his competition jumping) of 90 cm. For future record-tracking, we are probably going to have to keep track of competition vs. non-competition records, since the competition ones are so much harder to set (only two tries for a high jump). Re: Sidehop record?
Just a note on terminology.
For what it's worth, the term "sidehop" in the bike world refers to what unicyclists call high jump. There are two bike high jump records. Sidehop is hopping over a bar, starting from a stationary position beside the bar. Bunny hop is riding towards the bar and then hopping over it. Perhaps for consistency we should also use the term sidehop to refer to high jump, and stick with long jump for the distance record. The new sidehop (ie high jump) world record, from UNICON XI, is 90 cm. -Kris. --- cybeross <cybeross.8kjey@timelimit.unicyclist.com> wrote: > > So that would be what? 2.9m? We have a bit of a quandry, because high jump is the recognized name from track & field, but apparently side hop is the recognized name from bike trials. I prefer high jump, as you don't need to be a trials expert to know what it means. I was not aware of the bicycling side hop until Kris mentioned it, so I'd consider it pretty obscure outside of trials enthusiasts. My recommendation is to keep the event name high jump, but to acknowledge that this can also be called side hop. As Kris clarified, he did a 90 cm side hop/high jump. As I clarified, the UNICON record is now 87 cm. If we ever start keeping thorough records of such things, we have to start differentiating the competition records from the non-competitive ones. Still, 90 is the mark to beat. Stay on top, John Foss, the Uni-Cyclone jfoss@unicycling.com www.unicycling.com <http://www.unicycling.com> "This unicycle is made all from lightweight materials. We don't currently do this in unicycling but I think it would be a good idea. Right now the highest rolling hop is 87cm, and the highest sidehop is 90 cm. I think it will be interesting to see which technique works the best, ultimately, for the highest record. -Kris __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
