You could try an air-horn and scare both bears and pedestrians (though I didn't
know Reading (do I remember you being near Reading?) had that large a population
of bears).

More usefully - would a pet shop have bells on straps for attaching to cats
collars? One of the cats that occasionally comes into my garden has a couple of
bells on its collar - I assume they are to warn birds, rather than scare bears,
but they might do what you want?

Re: Anti bear bell?

Up here in the BC Wilderness, many foresters and geologists carry "Bear Bangers"
and Bear Spray. The Bear bangers are flares that you deploy if a bear is being
threatening. They shoot up about 20 metres and emit a very loud **boooom**. Bear
Spray is extra extra strong mace for close bear encounters.

Don't you think that these would be better than tinkly bells for people who make
circus references?

Re: Anti bear bell?

Isn't that how you tell the difference between grizzly bear droppings and black
bear droppings.

The grizzly bear droppings are full of tiny little bells.

Yes, that and it smells like pepper spray.
