Tightrope walking
Planning on learning to tightrope walk.
I'm looking for any hints/help/tips etc on making a tightrope, what cable, how to tension etc and also any advice on how to learn. If I get good I would like to ride unicycle across too, but need to build it and learn to walk first. Hope someone can help. |

I know one person that does tight rope. He is heavier than me and much older. Unfotunatly he lives 6 hours away. I have often wondered if riding a uni on the tight rope is that difficult the way its done on the rim fitting the wire or if its just the visual thing. Sometimes in performing the easier things get the best crowd reaction due to visual appeal and only the person performing can understand the true difficulty.

We use old 24" Schwinn unis with metal hoops welded to the inside walls of the rim to give a better fit to the cable. I'll try to remember to take some photos next week.

I haven't tried without a tyre on but i think it would be easier because you wouldn't have to worry about slipping off the side or turning slightly.Heres a video of me riding one with a tyre, starts at 1:08

Thanks guys.
Awesome video! Totally inspired. Anyone know what cable is best to make the tightrope from? |

wear the right shoes, and start with the rope close to the ground, not over any huge waterfalls

Hey Revobuzz,
As I said earlier, we are using old 24" Schwinns with metal hoops/rings welded to the rim (here's a couple of pictures). This helps strengthen the rim which takes a beating when it falls from the wire. The wire we are using is 3/4 inch. I'm not sure what the tension is on the wire.

I realize it's not the same thing but have you tried slacklining? You can buy the required gear for about $40 and it's a lot of fun. Have a look on Youtube for how-to's and whatnot.
