I remember that...

Schwinn owners manual that I got with my first uni my parents bought for me in 1974. I still have the unicycle in my garage and ride it every once in awhile. Love that thing still. Here is a newspaper article done on me in 1979 while riding it to save gas. I think gas may have gotten close to a dollar a gallon back in the day.

This pic dates back to about 1984-85, from my days as a club dj for the Red onion. I was still in my 20's then! I got this uni specifically for "Beach party" Sundays, and I would challenge people to try to throw a hula hoop around me while I randomly rode around on the dance floor!

I think I did this for only one Beach party, and don't remember what happened to the uni after that. This was one of the rare and fleeting times I even came in contact with a uni between about 1967 and late 2005! Btw, I still have that skateboard!

Hey John, any idea what brand of uni this was?

Not enough visible to be exact, but it's a typical Tiawan cheapie from the period. Metal bar bumpers on a seat you still don't want to drop, and lolipop bearings. Cottered or cotterless, depending on the year. Changeover for those kind was probably around 1985 or so. They were sold in the US under various names, depending on the importer/distributor.

There is something wrong with the man in that picture. His torso seems way too short! The image may have been "worked" in order to fit the layout? Those Columbias were good, solid unicycles in their day.

This photo is from the 1972 Pontiac Unicycle Roundup. These events, hosted by the Pontiac Unicyclists (Michigan) led to the USA Nationals event we now call NAUCC. They also led to Unicon, which was developed out of the USA model. That funny mark in the middle of the shot is a crop mark; this picture was published in at least one newspaper.

This is a Monkees trading card, which I got from eBay. Mickey Dolenz is riding one of the Monkees' training wheel unicycles. These had fenders, mag wheels to match the MonkeeMobile, and a pair of training wheels to make them not-unicycles. And the seats were way too low.

This one's from UPI (United Press International), December 7, 1970. The text at the top reads:
Newbury, Ohio: While some students may take buses to school or walk, St. Helen Parish School students demonstrate the use of the unicycles. Pupils at this tiny parochial school, which has only grades four through eight, are required to ride a unicycle or face a failing mark in physical education. So all the boys and girls, 128 of them, have learned to master the unicycle, most difficult to ride of all wheeled conveyances. UPI TELEPHOTO rk/rk

One of my teammates in Ride The Lobster, Dave White, was one of those students. He might even be in this picture! Note the kid in the background; about to take the stairs down. The girls in the foreground are not riding Schwinns but I can't tell what those unicycles are. Possibly homemade.

Two photos, from either the Detroit News or Detroit Free Press, of the Redford Township Unicycle Club (Michigan) in 1982. Jump ropers are Hans Mills, Deborah Jones and David Brichford. As mentioned earlier in this thread, Dave passed away a few years ago. Hans Mills is active in the Unicycling Society of America leadership, and Deborah Jones was the first World Champion of Pairs Freestyle (along with her partner, me). Note the automotive tie-down straps to aid in the jump-roping.

Second photo Shows Dave and Hans again, on our 4-way ramp. We also had a jump ramp, on which we'd try to clear distances of 10' and more, on our old Schwinns and Miyatas. This photo was heavily doctored; their faces were lightened quite a bit, and you'll notice some paint around Hans' hand. I think that photo was presented with Hans' hand sticking out of the side, into where the text was.

And no, that guy in the background is not talking on a cell phone; they weren't invented yet.

This old Uni is currently on ebay. I think the seat is off of a bike though.

It looks as if there is not 180 degrees between the cranks ...
