Remember the June 4th Incident, also known as the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989

If you're not already familiar, check out and remember the June 4th Incident, also known as the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989. This event took place 21 years ago, today.

Tens of thousands of protesters, many of which were students, were demanding democratic reform and an end to corruption. This prompted a military response from the Chinese government, where some 3000+ protesters were massacred in the streets. A foreign journalist also captured video of the iconic "Tank Man," pictured below. The People's Republic of China still denies most of what occurred that day, and this event is still censored in China.

This event serves as a warning of what a government with too much power can do to the governed.

This is one of the reasons why I try to avoid buying things made in China. I try to choose non-Chinese made goods over Chinese-made goods, when it's possible. A quick look at the manufacturer's origin doesn't take much time.

This is one of those historic life events for which I remember where I was when I heard the news. Right up there with JFK's death, walking on the moon, September 11 World Trade Center attack and the day Elvis died.
