Two more shows and the season is over. This is the Beginning/Intermediate group of our circus. The them for the act is The Jetsons. Penny (Jane) and I (George) were the only 2 adults out of 6 that started in September to stay in the class. We had 33 beginners (not counting the adults) that we paired up with the intermediate kids. It's been a total blast being in the act with my daughter (she's the blond on the giraffe with the tripod on her shoulder).

Another great ride this morning! I don't know how or why, but I wrote this poem about half way through:
The sun is shrouded by the morning gloom; As spirits rise from their ghostly tomb A distant howl echoes through the trees; Screams of horror bring you to your knees You muster all courage, confronting your fear; And realize fate is what brought you here With determined resolve, letting truth be your guide; Breaking free of convention, you're the life of your ride! Whoever designed this uni MUST have gotten his inspiration from this classic 70's novelty "drinking bird" toy!

sorry for that many pics
but i had a great muni day yesterday: 11 hours of riding and hiking, three cable cars, lot of uphill walking, more downhill riding, great landscape. staying for the night on the top with our youngest, and today we walked all the way down...

Peebles Island
Just went for what I planned to be about a 7 mile road ride over a few small bridges I wanted to check out. Then a jogger suggested I try the trails in the park on Peebles Island. Very nice. Not too rugged, but would have been easier if I let some air out of the tires (had my Halo Twin Rail at about 65psi). Still a great ride. Will have to go back with Liz and explore a bit more. ~10.5 miles

I love the beauty and solitude of this trail. I found a ringneck snake basking in the middle of the trail and put him back, deep in the brush so he wouldn't become mtb roadkill. Beautiful specimen.

Ashland Spring Thaw 2012
Last Saturday was our local annual mountain bike race: the Ashland Spring Thaw. It's a little over 25 miles long with 2,700' elevation gain and loss (starts and finishes at 2,200' and tops out at 4.900'). It starts out with 8 miles of climbing, mostly on gravel and dirt roads with one mile of steep single track ascent. Once we reach the top, it's another 12 miles of relatively flat and fast slightly rolling gravel roads. Perfect for a geared 36". Then the fun begins. 5+ miles of steep twisting singletrack descent.
I had two UPDs including one in which my unicycle shot out in front of me, bounded off the trail, started doing cartwheels down the hillside with my handlebar bell dinging with each impact. It finally got hung up in a young madrone tree about 60 feet below the trail. I lost a couple of minutes there, but so far I'm not showing signs of poison oak. It could have been worse, I suppose. Overall, it was a good race. No crashes, but some pretty serious muscle cramping. Total time 2:41. I placed 206 out of 217 participants. Maybe next year I'll be able to race against another unicyclist. One of the race organizers posted her favorite overheard quote on their facebook page: "I was feeling fine, then that unicycle passed me, and totally demoralized me!" Yep, I live for that. ![]() Here are a couple of pics from one of the gentler parts of the singletrack ascent. I had been hoofing it up the steep parts but I saw the photographer and, not wanting to miss a good photo opportunity, I got back up on the beast and put on a show, despite my cramping legs. Yeah, I'm just that burly! Then I got off and walked some more. Geoff
