Wow Corbin, that really bites. I'm glad you weren't hurt!

Man, you bought a really expensive hub to compete in an important race. In my view, Mr. Florian need to replace your hub before RTL, or he can rent a hub to you...

Bye and good luck!

Well, that isn't quite true. I bought the hub because I wanted it and it suites my riding style (low cadence, strong legs). I also have had constant problems with bending crank arms, so a splined hub with strong cranks sounded *perfect* for me.

RTL (and the Vietnam tour, for which I didn't have the hub in time for) were factors that pushed me over the edge for buying it. So, the race did influence me, but it wasn't the reason I bought it.

I really love the hub. It really renewed my interest in long-distance unicycling, as I was starting to get bored with it (I like physical challenges, and riding a long distance only challenges your crotch pain).

I'm confident that Florian will stand behind the product and help me get it going. If I don't get it before the race it won't be the end of the world. I'll just end up riding (slower) on Jason (meaestro8's) coker.

This is one of the biggest disadvantages of buying new technology as there always seems to be problems when products first go on the market. Most things don't get tested good enough in labs, they actually need real people using the real products to see what problems they might have...Nonetheless, I hope you figure it out and get it fixed as I too want to see the speed machine I've heard and read about so much!

You're welcome to borrow my Hunter. It's got an airfoil rim, SS spokes, extra wide hub and a wheel TA tire.

Thanks Mike! I'm already borrowing back my old Coker frame and wheel build (extra wide, SS spokes, super-strong Adelman build). I've put tons of miles on that wheel, so I'm pretty comfortable with it. Plus, I can drop my same seat onto it, so the only real difference from what I have now is the geared hub (and the Nimbus frame, which isn't that great, IMHO -- it is too flexy).

corbin- man that sucks

but i work with these kinds of gearboxs alot on my robotics team
i really think as harper said it's the bearings especially if he uses cone bearings not sealed this fit all your sysmtoms if it cone
the good news if it is cone bearing that are the problems they many just need to be tighten
now i'm not sure about you mech skill but these thing are not fun to work on but it can be done with some tools and alot i mean alot of time
good luck -colin

Don't know if Robert Allen (Daytripper63) is reading the forums much, but if you can't get in touch with Florian another possibility is a loan of his 36" Schlumpf (non-ISIS), the one I rode in our little Crit race the other day. Let me know if you want to get in touch with him...

I hope you get a replacement quickly, Corbin. I rode my N36 with 110s yesterday to go vote, and it felt like a toy in comparison to my geared KH29. Such a wide, bouncy tire and so maneuverable.

Sad story! But what I was afraid would happen. I think we long distance riders take the equipment to the maximum that it can handle...and sometimes over the limit. I hope the problems can be fixed and I am sure Florian will fix it to get good reputation. RTL will be the definitive test of the geared unis! And we all are waiting for the test result. Personally I like the easy maintenance of the unicycle. When I was racing mountain bike back in the early days it was no high tech equipment (suspension forks, advanced braking system...) but to race a mountain bike in heavy terrain needed even more training and was a lot more fun than all the equipment to day... I have had some bad dreams that my unicycle fun will end up the same way. Give me a wheel and some pedals and have a lot of fun!

I'm still here, just working to much.
John, if your not going to use the guni then I dont have a problem with Corbin borrowing it as long as he takes full responsibilty for it if anything happens to it.
just let me know
Robert

Hi everyone,
First off, Florian Schlumpf is my hero! He is a great guy. He knows how important the race is to me, so he's going to send me a fixed up hub today! I should get it by monday, which means I should be able to have my wheel back together by the middle of next week!!

Florian had been pretty busy lately; his brother recently died from a motorcycle crash, and he has been busy managing two businesses because of that. I told him to not worry about me, and that his family matters should take the highest priority.

He thinks the hub may have failed in the same way that Chuck's failed. I'm mailing it back to him today, so I'll let everyone know once I find out the details.

I've really missed the hub for the past few days. I rode ungeared for 16 miles last night, and my left leg has a strange soreness that happens from spinning to fast. I really don't enjoy riding ungeared anymore, and it seems like I'm spinning madingly fast to maintain 18mph downhill. On flats, I can barely maintain 15mph -- and that's only if I'm really pushing hard. My spinning speed has definitely slowed down since I started riding geared up.

I've said it before, and I'll said it again. I've seen the future of unicycling, and it is geared.

Florian IS a great guy. I really enjoyed riding with him in Laos. I'm very sad to hear of his brother.

Amazing. You rarely see this kind of excellent customer service with any other person or company. Florian is definitely a great guy and I am glad you will be able to use a geared hub for the race!

Really sad to hear about Florians brother. But great to hear that he's fixing things up for Corbin despite the family tragedy. He is such a meticulous guy I don't think he'd get any sleep until the problem was fixed, and every little flaw in the hubs were corrected.

He is definitely one of the most awesome people I've met in unicycling. And if there was ever a unicycle hall of fame...he would be in it.
