There will be a world record attempt for unicycling one hour (women) on 2 Sept
1995 in Schwedt/Oder, Germany. Just to be sure that it is really a world record: Do anybody know about previous record attempts? Is there a statistics list about unicycling sports records? Thank you for reading this news. Ralf Laue, Leipzig, Germany |

I know I'll never set an endurance record, but 1 hour seems like a helluva long time... I'm pretty sure my personal best is in the one - two minute range... |

I ride 20 - 30 minutes everyday without a dismount, and I'm not trying for any record. It's harder to stay up that long if your doing trick's though, If you are pushing your limits (like you should be) you're gonna fall in short time. Re: world record attempt
In a message dated 95-08-22 18:37:26 EDT, you write:

Just to be sure that it is really a world >record: Do anybody know about previous record attempts? Many respondents thought you meant 'endurance' of one hour. If you did, that's been done already. According to THE UNICYCLE BOOK by Jack Wiley, 1973, the winner of a 'Rideathon' (continue riding as long as possible) was Mona Micheli, who rode continuously for seven hours, one minute. This was in Marion, Ohio in 1972. I assume you mean 'distance ridden in one hour' as is a coveted record among bicyclists. I don't know of any one hour records for women. Here are two for men: The July, 1975 issue of the Unicycling Society of America NEWSLETTER listed some speed records that were set in 1888. In Peoria, Illinois, Bert Myers rode his 'Light Champion' unicycle 13 miles and 5098 feet in one hour. (Sorry, I'm leaving the metric conversion headache to you). The 'Light Champion' was a bicycle, which in 1886 came with wheels between 48 and 60 inches. We don't know which size he rode. In 1986, Floyd Beattie of Athens, Ohio set a one hour record at a meeting of the International Human Powered Vehicle Association. I can't find the exact details, but I believe he got just under 15 miles. He was using a 40 or 45 inch wheel. On August 9, 1987, Takayuki Koike of Kanagawa, Japan rode 100 miles in 6 hours, 44 minutes, 21.48 seconds. He did not get off the unicycle. This is the current world record, and is listed in Guinness. His unicycle had a 42" (heavy) air tire. Floyd Beattie was racing with him (at almost twice Takayuki's age) and finished in 6:59. He at least got off a few times! Those will be hard acts to follow. I know the men's hour record can be broken, because when Floyd set the record he was sick, and didn't quite finish his hour. I imagine a women's record of a similar time can be set, or a slower time with a smaller wheel. Please let us all know the results of the event, including wheel sizes and crank arm lengths used. Then the next challengers will know what to shoot for! Stay on Top! John Foss (who prefers to race for 1 minute or less) unicycle@aol.com |
