You probably don't know this, but I make messenger bags. You can see a few examples of the one's that I've made here: http://picasaweb.google.com/oddchilduprising

My next project is making a messenger bag for a friend who's really into math and physics, dare I say, he may be a genius. He knows far more about this stuff than I do, and I suspect many of you know more than I do as well.

Anyway, I'm making this messenger bag, and I want to put something that he could appreciate on it.

I was thinking of

e^i(pi) + 1 = 0

because it really is nice, simple, and beautiful, plus there's that euler quote.

I was wondering if anyone had anything a little bit more complex, or less well known formula that I might be able to sew onto one of these things. Let me know if you've got ideas (or want a messenger bag).

I can't help with any formulas but I do have a physics question:

If one has a doctorate in physics, you can call them doctor but are they a physician?

My all time favorite is this one portrayed on a tee-shirt. The equations are Maxwell's equations in point form. They describe the behavior of electromagnetic radiation and therefore the behavior of light.

Find out your friend's passion in his field. Electromagnetics? Mechanics? Linear Algebra? 768?

For each subset of math and physics there is bound to be a formula or three that would express it nicely.

Of course, your equation is a fave of many a math geek.

<threadjack>The bags do look great, Nick--nice work. As an owner of a Chrome bag (from back in 1998, when they made bags that look nearly identical to yours), I have a suggestion. Where you've sewn in the side stabilizing strap, would it be a much bigger challenge to instead sew some little "D" loops on each side? My bag, like yours, has the strap sewn on, but it limits it to swinging a certain direction. When I ordered mine, I had to specify that I wear the bag on my right shoulder; but others who have asked to borrow it have had to wear it on their "wrong" shoulder because it doesn't have a way to swap the stabilizer strap. Anyway, if it's not much difference in cost or production time, it can make your bags more versatile. </threadjack>

I, too, am bereft of good formulae to try out, but appreciate learning about the Petersen graphs. I don't know that I remember ever seeing the original formula, either; but it was back in 1984 when I last took a math class (differential equations), so I guess my memory lag is excusable ...

To illustrate:

An E&M geek would appreciate Maxwell's equations, in some form.

A thermodynamics geek might like to see the first or second law.

pkittle, I'll consider the D-ring Idea, but the shoulder strap needs to be sewn on, so I'm not sure how switching the side stabilizing strap would help. Although maybe I'm jsut mis understanding you. If you have time, maybe you could draw out what you mean? I'm always looking to improve whatever I'm doing.
