29" Discussion thread

I'd like to dedicate this thread to the 29" (Brand name makes no difference).

Realistically what are other riders using their 29" uni for?

1) Long distance/Touring riding
2) MUNI
3) All purpose (Your one & only, first choice) uni riding

Pass along any comments you wish regarding the 29" in this thread.

Thanks

Been out with my kh24 a couple of times doing xc on smooth and wide trails. I know, it is not where the kh24 belongs. But before I buy a 29er I'd like to know how you (who have the experience) value the difference: How much more enjoyable will my xc-rides be with the bigger wheel on a scale from 1–5?

Well, the brand does make a bit of difference... unless I'm only allowed to talk about my Schlumpf in low gear mode in this thread

Basically though, 29ers have been my favorite all purpose unicycle for about 2 years now. I spent 9 months without a car last year, and my Nimbus 29 was not only my daily commuting vehicle, it was my only form of non-public transport.

These days my Schlumpf is used for commuting (typically 16 miles per day through Central London), and for touring on. I've used it for muni too, although have to admit that is not where it's stong point lies for me (I keep meaning to get around to rebuilding the Nimbus for muni though).

About the only regular unicycling that I don't use the 29er for is playing hockey.

You'd better make sure you don't go down any drops more than a couple of milimeters then

I've just put 115mm cranks on my 29er (swapped from 125s). They are fab. No noticeable loss of control but so fast! It's almost impossible to ride slowly. I love them.

Not quite ready to put them on my N36, but hope to one day soon.

Semach.the.monkey. Thanks, you are probably right about the saddle height. I did notice my legs don't extend all the way.

Cathwood. I am ordering an extra set of cranks, railbar seat adjustment. Like the idea of being able to go faster but still have control.

Municycler. Will post creamsicle after I shrink the picture (allowed only 800x600 resolution and less than 1 meg size)

Nice unicycles you have there.

Would you buy your son a 29er someday or will you let him ride yours.

I've tried 150, 125, 115 and 100 on my 36er. I think my favourites were the 125s; I have 115s on there at the moment but the reduction in control results in me not actually going any faster than the 125s and feeling less comfortable.

115 feels a bit hairy but OK. The 100s felt very hairy so I was actually slower; I didn't really give them a fair try though.

I'm sure 115s will feel OK if I stick with them, but for my urban riding I'm inclined to stick with the control and speed of the 125s.

I don't have a 29 (yet), but I'm a little worried that since I decided to start out on a 26, I won't have any use for such a small gain in wheel size when I do move up, and will be "forced" to go straight to a 36.

I really like the looks of the 29's. They seem like such a good compromise between a too small 20 and a huge 36.

I sold my 29 to get a 26, still have a 24. Al I ride is the 26, I don't see any reason to go smaller, but if I were to go larger it would a 36. I can do anything on the 26 that I can do on a 24, but the 26 is more stable for climbing, rolls obstacles better, and I have tons of tires choices.

I'd consider a 29 in place of the 26 only if there were some decent tire choices, i.e. 2.5-2.7". I rode the Stout, it's way to narrow for tech stuff unless your KH himself.

Now that KH is making a 26" frame and 47mm rim, folks who want a big muni can choose, so were no longer stuck with choosing a 24 or a 29.

Once I sell my 24, I'm looking at getting a KH 36

And just a thought on crank lengths: I don't think anyone should limit their crank length to short lengths just because most big wheel riders use a short crank; it's probably cuz they don't do technical muni If anything, getting a 29er rolling big obstacles, climbing steep hills, or hopping are all easier with a long crank. I ran 165's on my KH 29 and it was great for muni. For XC I could get by with 150's.
