Saddam Hussein sentenced to death
The news from the British Broardcasting Company
/ D i s c u s s // A victory for Iraq? // A victory for the US? // A victory for Democracy? // A defeat for Islamic Extremism? // A defeat for Terrorism? // Is the world safer? // Should he be sentenced to death? // The verdict was in NO WAY timed to coincide with US elections. The world isn't any safer than when he was alive in custody, but I think he deserves it.

is in college. and on magazines.

He'll probablly be sentanced to death a couple more times, the recent trial was just about the 1982 Shiite killings. He still has more to go.

Groovy!

Why should we kill him?
Just put him in jail for life with no parole unless he learns to juggle a 13 ball cascade for at least 200 catches. Then send him to The WJF to win the Endurance comp.

Execution

Hanging seems a very symbolic and almost barbaric considering that there's ways of executing that are far less painful ie. Lethal Injection. Where do principles come into the treatment of people like Saddam? Why not set the example and simply imprision him until he dies. AndyC //Discuss |

Murder is wrong for any reason. He should not be killed. Furthermore, if he his murdered he will only become a martyr and make the violence worse. We are setencing us soldiers, iraqi civilians, and future victims of terrorism to death along with him.

I vote for a compromise...we hang him, and then lock him up for life.

I'm a fence sitter when it comes to capital punishment, I'm undecided on whether it is right or wrong, but I do not think that it is murder. Murder generally implies that it is unlawful. Capital punishment, regardless of what people's opinions might be, is not unlawful. What you probably mean is that killing somebody is wrong for any reason, but you were looking for a stronger word. I don't think murder is the right word.

I'm not at all comfortable with capital punishment although I can see some merit in some arguments in favour of it in certain very special circumstances.
What annoys me is that huge amounts of money, political pressure, and media attention will be spent on the debate as to whether this particular miserable individual should be hanged, as if it matters more than the tens of thousands of people killed in the recent war, the several people blown apart each day in the insurgency, or the US and UK soldiers being killed in a stupid war that the Secretary General of the UN has said has no legal validity... Or even, nearer to home, the 9 people a day killed on the roads in the UK, the 2-3 kids a week killed by their parents or guardians in this country, or the 300 000 Americans a year who die of obesity-related illnesses. Saddam was playing for stakes this big. He would have used the death penalty without compunction, time after time; he is to this extent less deserving of our sympathy than the mainly socio-economically deprived denizens of Death Row in the US. As for the political effects of killing him? Incalculable - which is part of why we should never have meddled in the region in the first palce.
