2006 Whiteface Mountain Uphill race report

Hey all!

This past Saturday, June 17, was the 5th annual Whiteface Mtn Uphill Bike Race in upstate NY, USA, and this was my second year in the event. It was a real kick.

My race story can be found here.

But I'm tired of doing it myself, so read it and then come do it with me next year!

Way to go Steve! Great write-up, and nice to see how soundly you bested your results from last year. With climbs and times like that, you're pedaling with a pretty elite crowd.

Congratulations!

Nice write-up, well done for beating your record and completing the race in such a short time. Something tells me you are going to have to train very hard to cut another 30 minutes off next year though!

Did you manage to beat any bikers?

I beat 25 or 30 bikers.

Here's links to some race photos:

Here I'm just starting, asking a spectator "Why are they all so serious?"

Great story. I am just at the beginning of my learning curve for climbing, but getting better slowly and hoping to tackle something like this in the future.

That looks and sounds like a cardio final exam. Wish I could do something like that.

Nice, Steve.

I'm sure you would be more than competitive in such a race, Mr. Long.

One of the most fun parts is the surprise, interest, and amusement shown by the other competitors. Also, most of the bike racers think that unicycling is not just hard but close to impossible, so they give you even more credit than you really should get for it. It's too much fun, in between gasping for breaths. You'll love it.

dont worry, i will take a look at it, then ask my mom and stepdad if i can enter in it, every day for the next year, but i need some info on it, like when is it gonna happen next year, or around what time?
but would it be hard to do on a 24?
i really want to do this, is it all on cement?
is there a website for it?

I wouldn't do it on a 24, but it could be done. I did. Next year's race date is Jun 16/07 I believe.

Congrats Steveyo, you are an animal. I saw Filly in one of those pics, she is a riot. Way to work it, remember, pain is a good thing! Don't stop chasing those dreams, as you find out with every one, the bigger the effort, the bigger the reward.

Thanks. I hope you stay away from this race so I keep my record, because you're a bigger animal.

Filly tried out the KH29 a couple times, and seemed intrigued. As I left her she was ruminating that there are no women's uni records yet in any of these races. I'd be stoked to see her learn - she's freaky enough.
