ok, see if you can beat this!

For normal uni'ing I wear: rockgardn shin guards, pro-tek elbow pads (I think that is what brand they are - skateboarding pads), wrist protectors, bike gloves, bike helmet. That's for 28" uni or 24" when on road. Indoor or out, I always wear protection. At 42 years old, it just hurts Too Much to fall. I almost _never_ fall, but when I do it can hurt. My last UPD was catching my pant leg on my cranks -- just like someone reached out and grabbed my ankle, and I went down hard.

I will not get on the unis without the wrist guards. Period. Not at all.

But I've been back into mountain biking and for that I wear: full face Bellistic helmet, rockgardn flak jacket, rockgardn elbow/arm pads, rockgardn knee/shin pads, hiking boots, rockgardn carbon fiber gloves. I also have padded shorts, but they are a bit too small so I don't wear them anymore. Yes, it is very hot. But before getting all this stuff I took a major digger over the bars and as I was lying on the rocky ground, I was 100% sure I had really messed up my face. Impact 1" lower and I would have lost my teeth, 1" higher and broken nose.

The full getup is what I will be wearing in a couple of weeks out in the woods, trying some rocky downhill with my 24" uni.

And yes the stuff does stink after a while!!! Just toss the lot (except the helmets) into the wash, gentle cycle, and then a short dryer run, then hang to try completely.

That's because you're wearing all that gear. Take it all off and you'll find yourself with scraped knees and palms within five minutes (Murphy's Law of safety gear)

Helmet (muni always, flatland... not often enough)
harbinger wrist guards
661 legs protection
fox elbow/forearm guards
Brahma steel-toed shoes.

I have a bad wrist from snowboarding about 4 years ago, so I always wear the wrist guards. I have scars on the elbows from falling a couple times, if you ride in the winter elbow pads are mandatory. If you don't want to wear wrist guards, elbow guards are almost as good, you just have to condition yourself to fall on your arms instead of wrists.
I have scars on my legs from before I got leg protection (and from when I was too lazy to put them on). I think I need to find something better though, my last bad pedal bite actually sliced about an inch of both the fabric and my calf.

I just fell the other day, I must have just been tired. Fell sort of sideways/backwards, I just couldn't get my feet off the pedals. But, the pads worked. I didn't feel a thing!

Black and Blue Toes

Last year I had a UPD while riding muni. I swung right foot to catch my balance and kick a 500lb boulder. Ouch ! My big toe was sore for months. Last week, it happen again... This time I kicked a tree root(only 4" high). Triple ouch!!! I have three toes tape up. I included hot wax seal just for fun. It sweet

So along with : wrist, forearm, elbow, shin, knee, ankle, sun, eye and head protection; I'm looking for steel toe sneakers. Any ideas.

yes these daze, I'm mostly afraid of breaking philanges(toes and fingers)

Walmart (I know, we suck) sells Brahma brand shoes for under $30 that look like sneakers but have steel toes. I wear their hiking boot style ones when I ride, and it works great. Actually, I wear them for when I'm not riding. Just get a gel insert for them

At the moment I wear my mountain biking gloves and Bell Slant cycling helmet.
Once I start to learn to freemount, then I'm going to invest in some shin-guards. (I've got crappy plastic pedals on the uni at the moment and would like a tidy set of DMR pedals, but I'm afraid learning with spiky DMR's will be very painful.)

Good advice...where can I get one from cos I landed twice hard on my back learning to jump mount.... I moved off the concert eventually to learn but I get into a stickie mess when it rains.

Thanks! I thought it was a decent half-ass solution to the falling on the back issue. A $15 jacket from a discount sporting goods store will probably work just fine. I use my fancy schmancy expensive kayaking vest because that's what I have. it is over kill for unicycling.

Critter: sounds like you broke your toe. I have a toe that I broke walking into a chair in the dark. Took 8 months to heal and if it was bonked the wrong way ever so slightly, it would be so painful I'd feel faint and nauseated.
