NAUCC 2006 in Memphis

NAUCC 2006 - Memphis, Tennessee
June 30 – July 5, 2006

“Meet ya at the Crossroads”:
The word Tennessee is a Native American word meaning “the meeting place.” Because Memphis is centrally located and easy to get to, we hope to attract attendees from all areas of the continent. The Memphis International Airport serves as a hub for the region as well as the entire nation. Those purple-tailed FedEx planes fly in and out of here every day for a reason! Located at the intersection of interstate highways I-55 and I-40, Memphis serves as our country’s crossroads. Memphis is often chosen as a convention city and has numerous hotels to accommodate convention attendees. Camping is available in near-by state parks and even within the city. There are numerous restaurants featuring not only our world-famous barbeque, but every cuisine one could imagine. As you would expect from a major metropolitan community of more than a 1.5 million folks, Memphis has historical sites, museums, galleries, parks, multi-use paths and shopping – of course. Memphis’s historical importance (the Civil War and Civil Rights Movement) and cultural influences (music and art) offer a great destination vacation. With the Smithsonian Museum of Rock and Soul, The National Civil Rights Museum, the Stax Museum of Soul, Beale Street, and of course, the home of Elvis “The King” Presley, Graceland, Memphis has something unique to offer the entire family.

Enjoy our Southern Hospitality:
A strong core group of MUCsters (Memphis Unicycle Club members) are planning what we hope will be the most highly attended NAUCC ever. We are throwing a party that is worthy of the passion and excitement for unicycling that we feel and you deserve. We are months from the event but our wheels are already turning! The Memphis community has been very receptive to the establishment and growth of our young club (three years now) and will welcome the unicyclists from throughout North America with the same open arms. In addition to the members of the Memphis Unicycle Club, their families and friends, a cadre of volunteers from various non-profit organizations will be on hand to meet, greet and direct all unicyclists for this exciting event.

We would love your help!
Although we look forward to playing hosts, we are seeking volunteers throughout our unicycle community who would like to lend a hand in the planning and officiating of this enormous undertaking. If anyone has a particular skill or passion, from organizing the raffle to timing races, etc., please let me know.

The Events:
We are planning the complete assortment of NAUCC events, reflecting the variety of talents that are embodied in the NAUCC membership. There is a reason that our club’s motto is “Come out and play in the MUC.” This reflects our club’s interest in off-road riding. We love pedaling through the muck often found during the early spring in our Mississippi River bottomland. At the NAUCC we will have daily off-road rides through some wonderful forested areas and world class mountain bike racing courses. Since another of our local interests is street/trials riding, we will provide an opportunity to play daily in our urban playground of downtown and midtown Memphis. We are planning to hold the track events under the lights in the cool of the Delta evening. We have secured the newly constructed gyms at St. George’s Independent School, Collierville. Uphill and downhill events will also be highlights of the 2006 NAUCC. The 10K marathon will be held beneath the shaded and beautiful, old growth forest of Overton Park. We also are pursuing an indoor trials competition venue.

Getting around Memphis:
Since the venues of the NAUCC are often spread out, getting around can be a big concern. The city and surrounding area is easy to navigate, mostly laid-out on a grid, with extensive, non-congested surface streets and a loop Interstate system. With little effort, you’ll be able to make that early morning MUni or Coker rides and easily join us for some urban trials after an interesting lunch at one of Memphis’s local restaurants.

So, save those frequent flyer miles, or plan on putting every unicycle that will fit in to your vehicle and head to the crossroads – Memphis, Tennessee. There’s gonna be a whole lot a shakin’ going on. We are going to uni-party like it is 2099!

Early Registration

Hey everybody,

Don't forget that the Early Registration deadline for the NAUCC is March 18. Don’t let your procrastination cost you your travel money.
