Do you often land on your bearing housings?

Do some people use their bearing housings as platforms to land on like pedals and cranks? In general are bearing housings very strong, to prevent the bearings from being crushed?

I have only landed on my bearing housings a couple of times in all my practice of learning crank grabs and pedal grabs, should I not worry about damaging the aluminum ones on my KH20 05?

I voted often, although it is unintentional. My imprecision doing crank grabs is hard on my bearing housings

I accidentally land on them all the time, and they've been fine so far. I ride a Onza 24" with the '05 KH/Onza hub which is the same I believe.

I hit my bearing housing occasionally while mounting. Though it hurts like hell, I can see no permanent damage occurring.

I think They should make steel bearingshousings for the KH

that would not be a very big amount of weight and it would make them very bombproof.

Butty: my sidehop (longjump) is from a static standstill, seat in. I've been trying to learn rolling long jump but as yet I don't jump any further then static.

bugman: You need to read threads more carefully to determine the subject matter.

When i used to do crank grabs i sometimes got on my bearing holders, but now i learned pedal grabs and i never land on them because the pedal is farther from the bearing house then the crank is. I land on my bearing holders when i grind sometimes though.

I totally agree. My KH 05 frame is a bit knackered due to the bearings wearing down the inside of the bearinghousings. Now the frame has some give around the bearing and squeaks which is pretty frickin annoying. When I next have some spare pennies I'm going t get a rowing frame rather than a KH 05 one. Don't think I could be convinced to get another alu frame in a hurry.

I used to hit mine when doing long pedalgaps to my crank. Now I hit the pedal instead, so no more issues. I'd be more worried abut destorying my pedal than I would be about destroying my bearing housings. If you are hitting your housings, also look out for damage to spokes/flanges.

You can always make your own steel bearing housings. It's not that hard, just might take you a couple days (3-5 hours per, assuming a manual mill).

I think that when you are doing pedal grabs, if you rotate the cranks in the air (so that they're vertical) you end up hitting your crank, and then falling onto your pedal (if it's not very accurate) so then, you not only maximize your vertical pedal grab, but you minimize contact with the bearing housing.

As far as the KH frame goes, i know Kris made an extra thick bottom main cap, so that this didn't happen, and on my frame, so far it's been perfect. I've done thousands of pedal grabs, and big gaps to pedal grabs, and the housings are great. But that's just me.

I have an 05 onza trials and I land on the bearing housings all the time. They're a bit bashed and scratched but this hasn't hampered their performance any.

I have however bent the black disc thing that goes between the crank and bearing and covers the side of the bearings (flange?) so that it rubs into the frame and was wearing into the metal of the frame. If I span the wheel (not on the ground) it would stop when the bent bit got to the frame and rubbed into it.

A hacksaw soon fixed this tho. (I cut the bottom half of the disc off)
