While out doing a muni circuit in the park, a mountain biker comes the other way. He says "Hi"... and I say "Hi" back. And we've passed each other...
For some reason that's my all time favourite exchange of words.

Doesn't really fit in as a "Quote of the day" but it would fit into a "Weird looks of the day" thread. I'll share it here though since it kinda sorta fits.
I was on the end of my 3rd lap around my subdivision and my tee shirt was soaked entirely through since this was about the 20 mile point. I had pulled my shirt out away from my skin to let some air in. I was stinky, sweaty and tired. After a minute I dropped my wet shirt back down. Now, I have one of Scott's wonderful seats. It always treats me right. Today it played a prank on me. ![]() It has this wonderful extra handle to rest my other hand on and whatnot. The next several folks that I passed gave me the strangest looks. Usually I get smiles and waves. These people were looking at me like I was Charles Manson or something. I happened to glance down and saw that my shirt had dropped down over the V-Grip part of the seat handle, effectively creating a tent-like protrusion straight out in front of me. To the passerby I looked like a unicycling pervert. I laughed out loud and quickly pulled the shirt off the handle. No wonder I was getting those looks. Hopefully nobody got any pictures. In the future I'll be more cautious about how my shirt hangs down. |

I have done something like that, I was riding around after a few hours, and my shirt was pretty wet, so it was hanging down a little more then usual. I went to ride SIF but the shirt was over the handle, and I didnt notice, so I grabbed the seat how I usually do well having it pull the shirt out about 8 inches.
You can all picture that for a little. All my friends who I was with got a good laugh out of it, and when I noticed what I did and how it looked, I couldnt stop laughing for a few minuets. |

Ha ha! People like tryuing to ride the unicycle! Though they rarely can. Anyways, one time, I took my unicycle to school and left it under some stairs while I was in class. I went out at snack time to find it, and it wasn't there, and I thought, "AAH!Somebodyd stole it! But who?
Evil me: Easy! Whoever's down on the floor." Anyways, I asked the janitor for it, it was in his closet because some kids were playing in it, and he hated the idea of someone playing with something that wasn't theirs, actually, I think he was just worried it might break(impossible! It's official, it can't break! Not after all it's been thorough with me learning on it...), so he put it there so no one would find it, I almost didn't! It was a little weird because his closet just had a mop, a lot of PACE's (with pictures of a unicycle on about 1/7 of them) and a unicycle. Anyways, I went out to ride it, and what better place to hide than in plain sight? Apparently that doesn't work with unicycles. There was a jump rope craze, and, for about half an hour, there wes a unicycle craze, and then some kids wanted to try it, and the most common frase(girls wouldn't try it, they had their school uniform on and it had a skirt, that day, I had P.E., therefore having my P.E. uniform on, obviously with pants) was "Yo ni loco!" which sorta means(anyone with a better translation, quote me and translate!) slang for "I wouldn't do that even if I were crazy!"(I overheard one of the kids in a bowling alley once, a field trip, saying, "aprendi a correr esa cosa en 3 dias!" which means(translate?quote) "I learned to ride that thing in just three days!" Well, he probably meant the unicycle, which everyone seems to call "that thing") and then next semester, after the holidays I asked my friends to guess what I got for Christmas, and one of them guessed "Another one of those one wheeled bike thingies?" (the correct answer was a laptop, only problem is, I didn't want EVERYONE to know I had one(unfortunately, they did), I didn't wanna be cool 'cause I didn't want attention, I freeze up when everyone's looking and I haven't practiced anything, anyways, I also knew that my laptop would be cool, not me. Anyways, also turns out my grandpa used to ride a unicycle! No wonder he and Grandma knew the name and he, like my CLOSEST relatives who are REALLY used to seeing me ride, he's only seen me ride twice, don't stare at me, they look at me as if I was riding a bike, they were used to it! No one ever told me a word about Grandpa's unicycle, I think they wouldn't like to talk about it... **He's a "carpoenter," he once built a table, and Mom walked right beside it and it instantly broke, she didn't even touch it! Picture that carpenter on a unicycle. I like my grandpa! And at a party, one of my sister's friends said he rode, he atempted to ride, and said he used to, but he was just a little rusty, he was an inch better than everyone else there.

Today I was at the park riding up and down this small hill, hopping up one side, sorta pretending to Muni.
~35year old man with his 2 young boys just stared at me for 15 mins. Looked as if they were watching a martian. It just seemed rude, to me. In contrast a ~40year old bike rider rode by, and exclaimed in support, "Now that's the way to do it!". That, even though he had caught me, not quite making it to the top that time.

and sometimes you can look straight at them and say hello, but they will just keep staring blankly at you

On the weeked I got my first "What happened to your bike?" from a guy as I was riding past a house. I was too busy trying not to fall off on non flat grass, so I just smiled and rode on. But I got a "shake that ass" from his female friend. I was trying out the new bike shorts at the time
.On the same day at the park I had these kids come up to me with compliments like. "you are really good" "That looks really hard to do but you make it look easy" I love unicyling and I love how kids love it too.

expect staring...

Don't we all REALLY want people to stare at us? Admit it, we crave the attention :-) It's the same thing about people that have huge tattoos that cover their entire arm/leg....getting stared at is part of the deal. --Tom |
