At the end of Toque 2003 its the coldest I've ever been. The low temp was -22c or -9F with a 16mph wind that just hurt. I dont know how thoes crazy canadians do it all winter like that.
Yea that was a fun time. I wasnt sure the actual temp so I looked it up here

The best would be to do it with the 300 club, but ride a unicycle. The 300 club is a growing, elite group of south pole researchers. One of our grad students did a stint at the south pole as a post doc for 18 months and told me about it. It's actually a dangerous endeavor and probably not encouraged a great deal.
On days when the forecast is for -100F, they set the suana to +200F. They hover around the thermometer as it bounces around until it reaches -100F (if and when it does) and then strip down to shoes only. Then, dash out, circle the pole, and hit the sauna after coming back in. One well known trick is to do all of the running backwards. Gee, guess why. Anyway, that would be quite a feat on a unicycle.

Greg, I'd love to try that. I have gone from rolling naked in fresh snow (air temp 20F) to 104F water, but -100 to +200 must be insane. If I ever get to the South Pole, you can bet I will have a unicycle with me - but I'm sure it will be in the summer so no -100F.

The worst thing about riding in the winter, is not the cold itself, it f*cking hurts THAT much when you hit your fingertips on the saddle by mistake.

I think that the worst thing about riding in the winter is the ice. Whenever I do a one-foot or try to idle, the %¤#&/@£ ice is there and I fall and hurt my wrist.
Also if there is snow, so that it covers the ice and you cannot see it... By the way, I have been riding in -10*C, but nothing colder here in Norway. Last edited by bjornthegreat; 2005-01-07 at 01:40 PM. |

Talk about wind-chill. Those guys of the 300 club that Greg mentioned sometimes have wind-chill of -155F. Coming in to the sauna at up to 240F gives almost a 400 degree difference. Google found tons of info. Here's a guy at -100F
I suppose you'd have to pump up your tire more than usual? ---Nathan |

The coldest I've ridden in is about 45F, I would have ridden in -5, but my seat rusted through over a month ago. I just havn't yet decided what to get as a new uni to replace my old 20 inch Schwinn.

This morning I rode to work @ -37 C (-34 F). Even though it was only a 2 minute ride, it was still cold...even for a Canuck
At least there was no wind; just a "shallow fog" of cold everywhere. It was quite picturesque, actually!

-22 Canadian. I can't remember which is which, celsius maybe? It didn't seem too cold. I was wearing a sweater, 2 t-shirts, jeans, shin pads, soccer socks, sneakers and sobeys bags. On one messed up unispin tireplant, I fell and my Saint Christopher medal swung up and stuck/froze to my lip. Kinda like when you lick a cold metal pole or popsicle and it sticks. Like on Dumb and Dumber. But it was one of those sweet rides wear you seem to make loads of progress.
