hi,
i have a old comp that used to be a windows 98 but i installed xp pro on it.
and when i turn it off, instead of turning off by itself it says "it is now safe to turn off your computer" so i have to press the off button.
anyone know how to change this?

i dont think you can i think it depends on the comp different comps do it or dont i dont think you can change it

It could be because the computer was designed before XP came around... My roomates comp gives a bluescreen-error message complaining that her memory is bad when it tries to shutdown, nothing's wrong with the memory, it's just 'cause XP sucks...
I'd fix the whole thing with a dose of Linux

You could try fiddling with the power management settings in the BIOS. I think you need some special power management setting set to allow the operating system to completely shut down the computer and shut off the power. If your BIOS has the support for it I think you'll be able to get what you want.

It depends on whether your motherboard and power supply are ATX or AT (i think). With and AT system, the switch on the front of your computer directly controls the power supply. With an ATX system, the switch on the front of the case is connected to the motherboard, and its the motherboard that tells the power supply to switch on or off (ie. switches itself off when you shut down)

Did it switch itself off when it was running 98? if not then its probably an AT system...
