Storming again, roads washed out all over the place, Maybe that bridge will wash out and they will need to fly us back to the fire base.

I would love a 20 minute flight in a TC 690 Turbo Commander instead of a 8 hour drive (the long way because all 3 shortcuts are washed out/flooded) after we are done this training session.

But it would suck for most involved if that bridge did go, there is already water flowing over it...

Today a sudden gust of wind blew me off my 26. Luckily I was riding at cruising speed and managed to run off the fall (I was only wearing sandals, light summer clothing and a helmet, so a fall would have removed a lot of skin surface).

Tonight I recognized that some of the screws holding my handle are loose. I thought I had taken them all out and added thread lock. I suppose I must have forgotten some.

It's difficult to pin down a particular reason for why this kicked off.

But I do know that I'd pay good money to see the cocky tw*t who was goading the police take a rubber bullet to the chest.

I'm not saying the sole reason for things kicking off is re closure of youth centres, but... There's something changed in the social, political and economic environment for these riots to have kicked off; cops have shot people over the last twenty years without people taking to the streets and looting. I think there's very strong disillusion with the institutions of society in the wake of MP's expenses, Murdoch's shenanigans, police taking bribes and the cuts to EMA and other services folks rely on.

Both Labour and the Tories have consistently tried to de-politicise society and deny the existence of class. When you push individualism alongside consumerism to a class of people without the means to consume then when they kick off it's going to be ugly.

This isn't to try and justify people burning down home and awful things like that, but I'm getting pretty tired of the refusal of so many to look at wider socio-political causes and instead call for greater police repression as if that's going to change the conditions that give rise to the discontent felt by those sticking two fingers up to society an it's institutions.

We should always be wary of handing more powers to the police to be used against those we disapprove of. History shows that once they have those powers it's only a matter of time before they're used against folks whose cause you're more sympathetic to.

My best analogy at the moment is that there was looting in New Orleans, that doesn't mean there wasn't a Cat5 Hurricane.
There was looting in London, doesn't mean there wasn't/isn't a pile of reasons for the riots to have started in the first place.

By attempting to reduce the entire thing to a "law and order" issue is to ignore the underlying problems and a sure-fire way of making sure this will happen again.
