What crank length for 24" trials and other?'s
Hi,
I was doing some research tonight and came across some threads I didn't get a chance to read. John Childs said that the HOggy Gee was sized wrong and was most likely near a 2.6" size. So I thought it might fit in a Sem XLW frame for a 24 x 2.6. I have my old sem XLW frame lying around, and after reading about the upcoming Hoggy Gee tire as a possible trials tire, it got me wondering if I could essentially take the wheel (sun BFR rim)and frame from a Sem XLW and use the hoggy Gee as the tire and add 170 mm cranks. I have some Monty 158mm cranks lying around that I only used for 1 month and some sealed bearing snafu pedals. A lot of threads talk about trials crank length for a typical 20" trials uni, but what about crank lengths for a 24" trials uni? I still have my Gazz 2.6, but I wonder if the hoggy Gee will be better for trials instead of baby gazz. My Muni has a 24" x 3.0 Gazz on it and 170mm cranks, but it's just over 16 lbs including Magura brakes. When I weighed my Sem XLW with the 2.6 gazz on it, when it was complete, it weighed in at around 13 lbs. I figure that's a light uni that would be kind of fun for light trials (drops under three feet). Btw, this is a bargain basement uni concept, so Profiles are out of the question and wouldn't really be necessary due to my skill level and desire to stay low. Please share your thoughts.

Well, Iv been doing 24" trials for a year and a half now, and like the 165/170 mm size very much. I say 165 because for almost a year, and I really couldnt tell the big difference. so, I would say it's worth a try, especially with your monties. they should be fine if your not planning big drps or gaps.

With a big fat tyre like that, I guess the actual diameter of the wheel is nearer 26 inches than 24.
On a 26, 170s will provide loads of leverage for slow manoeuvres and stepping up/down obstacles. 170s are a bit slow and unwieldy for normal riding, though. 150s are a good all round size for a 24 or 26. i prefer something shorter, but then I do mostly cross country, mixed terrain, and some road work. I guess longer cranks are more likely to snap if you do big jumps/drops.
