If a group of birds is a flock... killer whales is a pod... what do you

It's a murder of crows, so could it be a felony of unicyclists?

I am told a group of jugglers is called a neverthriving (I have yet to
bother looking that up in an unabridged dictionary). I am curious to discover that word's origin. I hope a group of unicyclists could sound a bit more successful. :-) Jeff Lutkus --- "Neil Dunlop" <neild@roachmill.demon.co.uk> > wrote: If a group of birds is a flock... killer whales is a pod... what > do you call a group of unicyclist? I imagine these are the relevant definitions: Thriftless: unsuccessful/unfortunate/worthless Pack: a company or set of persons; generally implying low character, or association for some evil purpose, but often merely expressing contempt or depreciation, and formerly sometimes without such implication; a 'gang'; 'lot' ('never' takes almost 2 whole pages in the dictionary!) Meanwhile, Neverthriving is the name of a specific juggling club in Minnesota. I found a bunch of links to their Web site, but it seems to no longer be there... perhaps they are no longer thriving? :-) John Foss, the Uni-Cyclone jfoss@unicycling.com www.unicycling.com No matter what happens in life, somebody will find a way to take it too seriously |

I believe the origin of using the word as a collective noun for jugglers was a discussion on rec.juggling. I couldn't find it in the Google groups archives, but it only goes back to 1995 and ISTR reading the thread earlier than that. From the archives at the JIS I found that Brian Milner's .sig in 1994 included the sentence: The collective noun for a group of jugglers: "a neverthriving of jugglers" I still couldn't find the original thread, so it's quite possible that it came into common use just through being repeatedly posted in Brian's .sig. Of course, it could have reached Brian's .sig following a drunken convention discussion. Surprising how use on usenet can make a word popular. In the UK, offline unicyclists still talk about hovering and rocking. Those of us with usenet access, OTOH, almost always now use the American term 'idling'. -- Danny Colyer (remove safety to reply) http://www.speedy5.freeserve.co.uk/danny/danny.html "The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing. Jugglers are referred to as neverthriving... I'd say we should be called alwaysriding!

When Bath had a hockey team, we called ourselves the Bath Killer Wheels (my idea, which I have to say I thought was rather good). So I guess we could have been a pod. -- Danny Colyer (remove safety to reply) http://www.speedy5.freeserve.co.uk/danny/danny.html "The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing.
