Installing brakes

Hey all, I was looking through my Bike Nashbar catalog today when I had an
inspiration. Would it be possible to clamp a single bar end to the
seatpost? That bar end could have a brake lever mounted on it and/or a
cycle computer. I was thinking that it could stick out forward just under
the seat. Has anyone done this yet? The only problem is if the diameter of
your seatpost is not the same as that of the average handlebar; although,
if needed, shims could be used.

Yes. I attached a bar end to my seat post to attach a brake lever. It fit
great. The brake lever ended up about 5 inches below the seat, but it

Is there any trick used in Muni (trial ?) adapted for specific obstacles ?
(apart of downhill muscle activity relief)

It was the Semcycle seat post. The one without the holes. I think it's
about the same size as Miyata & some others. The bar end fit well. My
problem was that I had the wrong type of brake ?? for what I wanted to do,
which was to give my legs some relief on steep downhills. (On paved roads

Mark, I had seen a picture (http://www.unicycling.com/garage/special.htm)
where instead of a conventional bicycle break lever a gear-shifting lever
for a road bike was used. This way it could be set to a certain degree of
friction for descents. I think it was used by some group who crossed the
alps. Does anyone have more info about this? John Foss? Jeff

Bar end with gear lever is used extensively in the UK. There is a picture
of the one fitted to my Coker at:

it is not a brilliant picture but I think you will get the idea. I prefer
to be able to see my computer when I am riding so my bar end faces down. I
know that others prefer the lever right under the handle so they have it
facing up. The only problem you will have is that the bar end levers are
designed for a narrower bar than the bar ends so requires some packing (I
just rolled some card board up and put it in)

You can find bar ends that will fit a standard Miyata seat post. I used
one on my Muni for a brake mount.

There are also nobs that are designed to mount a cycle computer on aero
bars. An example of one is at

are other brands too that are a little longer. A combination of a bar end
and a nob would be a good way to mount a computer on a Coker. Or you could
just use a nob by itself.

There are some situations where a brake on a muni can be useful. For
example, when you want to hop up a steep incline while keeping the wheel
pointed straight up the incline. Normally you would turn sideways to the
incline to make the jumping easier, but sometimes that is not practical or
possible. In that situation locking up the wheel with the brake can be
helpful. In trials you can run into this situation when trying to hop up a
steep narrow beam. But jumping up an incline with the wheel locked like
that is not easy (it's beyond my skills).
