I have fallen many times, and never come close to hitting my head. But I still
wear a helmet every time.

I have used my helmet. I fell into a creek riding with Idaho Joe, and hit the
side of my head on a rock. Good excuse to buy a new helmet

I've put a dent in my old muni helmet too trying to cross a dry creek. I hate it
when those rocks roll under the wheel. Fortunately I was able to find a
replacement helmet on sale.

Always wear a helmet when riding muni.

Unicycling indoors, or on level ground, poses relatively little risk to the
head. In my over 20 years involvement with the sport, I have heard of scant few
head injuries.

But the head (brain) is the one important part of the body that can't heal. For
small children especially, wearing a helmet will never hurt you.

For riding off road, be it a smooth dirt path or anything more advanced, I
highly recommend helmets for everyone. You never know how you're going to land
when you ride over an unexpected bump. If you're surrounded by pointy rocks, as
I often am, the potential exists for one of them to get you every time.

Riding at Snoqualamie in 1999 in a downpour, my son slipped on a rock and went
down. His head hit a sharp rock - would've been quite a bad injury without the
helmet. I don't think I've ever hit my head either, but it will probably happen
sometime, and it will be helmeted.

If you look around, there are some bike helmets that provide more coverage for
the back and sides of the head. An alternative to the bike helmet are the
helmets used by skateboarders and and other "extreme" sports that give full
coverage front, sides and rear.

Giro has a cool new helmet called the Semi. It's styled like a cross between a
bike helmet and a skate helmet. It's got good coverage for the back of the head
which I consider to be important for unicycling.

I have hit the back of my head more than once (always wearing a helmet
fortunately). I am probably unusually clumsy, but I have done it while
practicing fast backward and also while practicing wheel walking or some other
new skill where my feet are fairly high up and I fall backwards - for example
when one of my feet gets caught in a peddle as I am going down.

It took two trip's to the emergency room and several stitches before I finally
broke down and bought a helmet. Now, I never ride without one and know the
importance of protecting your head. A blood clot on the brain is a scary thing!
