Coker Woes

Well, I tossed the cheap coker pedals today. The threads wouldn't hold the pedal
tight - too much play. I added some nice bmx pedals and they're great. I wish
that they would make a deluxe model without the cheap components. Brian

Does anyone know if you can just purchase a 36" wheel and build your own uni? jd

The only good component is the tyre, you can buy them separately. (my rim is
rusting and loosing chrome terribly).

It is not difficult to find people to roll rims, spokes are easy. I would go for
a 48 spoke hub (they are not easy to get in the UK). Frame, seat, cranks, pedals
are also easy. It would not be cheap at all though - but would it be impressive!

If I ever win the lottery ( fat chance as I don't buy tickets :-) A deluxe coker
is at the top of the list, alloy rim, 48 spoke, CF frame... No idea how much
it'd set me back , tho I already have the nice steel pinned alloy pedals and
miayta saddle and of course the tyre. Mind you after 600+ miles the tyre is
starting to look a little worn and I've gone through my second set of bearings ,
this time the sealed ones. I guess they weren't designed to take the off road
battering in the rain I give unis.

A high quality alloy rim for the Coker would be very cool. But how would it
feel? The Coker feeling comes from the momentum in that big heavy wheel.
Everyone who has ridden a Coker knows that Coker nirvana when the big Coker
feels like it is on autopilot and you're just floating there above the wheel. I
don't think you'll get that same feeling on a Coker with a light alloy rim. Am I
wrong? Would an alloy rim totally ruin that Coker feeling?

I think you're wrong. I know on my road bike when I went to lighter rims it was
all the difference between night and day. They were great! I think you'll still
have plenty of gyroscopic momentum or whatever that majic is that makes cokers
cokerish. The ease will probably most manifest itself in the launch - getting
that first pedal over the top. BB

I think if enough people would agree on specs. for a better wheel assembly for
the Coker tire, we could have a business proposition for someone out there.
Maybe the same could be said for frames. How many would have to be built to make
a reasonably priced deal work? Maybe we could take a vote/survey? Any other

Don't worry, a lot of that 'big heavy' comes from the tire and tube. I'm sure it
will ride just fine, if you can find a source of the nice rims.

John, I love the Coker feeling, but I bet I would love the Coker-Lite feeling
even more! If any of you out there get inspired to make a better 36" unicycle
using the Coker tire, you have an automatic order for one from me. Cost is no
object, just go for it.

Here in Minnesota, we are planning on making a new coker. Our goal is to
start with the wheel of the coker (and possibly the rim) and from there
build everything with better components. Depending on how many are built it
may be done by Neil Younggren (he has built several really nice unicycles
(he is a machinist by trade)) and O'sells (they build custom unicycles (20",
28", two-wheelers, and now working on a 6 foot and 10 foot)). Anyway, it
won't be until this fall. With all the modifications that it will have on it
(we have learned a lot from Ride Across Minnesota), it will be one sweet
long distance unicycle.

If someone can give me the specs. for the cocker rim I will talk to a rim
builder that does a 'deep V' rim. Very strong, very light and looks very cool. I
could get prices on different quantities.
