Bark less, wag more

Now I understand why I personally find so many subjective responses of some of the unicyclist on this forum so unpleasant to read.

All that alpha dog barking and no tail wagging!

From now on I remember the alpha dog is barking again.

If the moderators should find my reply offensive enough to warrant blacklisting my account, please know I’ll take it as a blessing.

Talking Replies to comments

Of course I get plenty of strange looks & comments, so I've prepared a few explanations for the surprised people out there:
  • I bought a bicycle at Ikea & tried to follow the assembly instructions. I ended up with this.
  • It's part of a divorce settlement - I ended up with half the bike.
  • I'm buying a bike on the instalment plan. Next week I get the other wheel.
  • I'm getting older, so I decided to downsize my bike.

Those are good. There's a separate thread in here somewhere that's more about what we say back; search on "comebacks" I think.

And sometimes it's okay to pre-empt the people you pass; taking the upper hand, as it were. Today on the Salmon Falls Trail (my local area) two guys on mountain bikes stopped to let me pass. After saying thank you, I said "Don't let this happen to you!" The front guy laughed immediately, and a few seconds later the second guy said "So what happened to your other wheel?" Standard response. I was already riding away, so I raised up my hands and said "I don't know!"

I could have done better:
  • In my garage
  • My wife's riding it
  • It ended up in the lake
  • Which one?

Love it.

There is some truth in it too. Like the drug addict warning others to avoid getting hooked. Haven't ridden a bike much since taking up unicycling.

How true. I haven't ridden any of my bikes (and I have a basement full) since I've learned how to ride. I look at it as "I'm m not gonna get better if I don't keep riding it". Also trying to spread the word at the local trail, hoping to have people take up interest in the sport. Hopefully one day, I'll have company...

It was actually the beta dog (if that is a thing) that was barking.

I'm in a similar situation. When I ride with bikes I'm kind of slow on the flats, keep up or pass on the ups, but get creamed on the downhills. So I'm tempted to pull out the old Miyata Triplecross, which has been hanging in the garage without a seat on it, for many years. But I don't, mostly because I'm afraid of liking it, and doing it more and more, and my uni skills declining.

Bicyclist: Big wheels keep on rollin'
Me: They do indeed.

Too bad he didn't correctly quote the song and say, "big wheel keep on turnin'," so I could respond, "Proud Mary keep on burnin'."

My go to statements

When I pass a family that is looking in awe...
I raise my hands in the air and say "Look Ma, No Hands"

When I get the "Where's your/Lost your" question I say
"Oh, the training wheel? Got rid of that a long time ago"

And for all the kids that look and wish they could be cool like you..
"You could do it! Just practice 1 hour a day for 2 weeks (Instead of video games) and you'll be riding around the block

Positive feedback

With some regularity I also get the well-known silly comments during practising, but not always, like tonight.

I came across two people that I had seen before after a practice session and they had never seen me ride. I was just walking back to the post from where I always start at that practice spot. Luckily I rode away in one go, on which I received compliments: they thought it was very good that I could do that: doing the 'impossible'.

They also spoke to a number of young people who stood by the water and were fishing: "don't you think that's great?" To which one of them said: "I am not copying it".

I get a bit of the impression that in this thread the negative reactions often prevail, while in my neighborhood I mainly get positive reactions.

People like to complain and when it is about unicycling or non-unicyclists making dumb remarks, peeps do it here. Lately I must say that Ive had many positive reactions. When riding in the forest off-road, mountain-bikers imagine it must be very hard on just one wheel. Last few rides not one of them asked about the missing wheel. Amazing. Also some people clap or give a thumbs up when I ride by and sometimes people just wanna have a conversation.

I ride mostly at night and I'm well equipped with lights including a Xuan Wheel Light. I had it displaying a pulsing star the other night.

A guy called out as I rode by, "I'd be tripping now if I was on Acid."

A couple of years ago (before the Xuan), a guy walking the other way said, "At least you're not an alien spaceship".

as I was climbing a hill I had my torso bent forward and my eyes were focused ahead of my wheel (though my head was alternatively going slightly to the right and to the left).
A lady on a bicycle: "Are you looking for your other wheel?"

I was out early Sunday AM, on a nearly deserted bike trail, and I overheard this snipped of conversation as I passed an oncoming group: "Nope, still bikeless".
