Gmail, the forthcoming email from Google is apparently going to have 1GB of free storage

Yeah, I had 106% of my mailbox space used, now I have 4.

why would someone need 1gb of space if the messages sent can be no bigger than 1mb. 100mb will do me, hotmails 2mb is pretty small lol

Damn, somebody already has 'andrew_carter' and it's not me! Thanks for letting us know about Gmail. 1GB storage, that's absolutely amazing! I'm going to get in early and make andrew_carter@gmail.com my new account. It looks really nice and handy to use too. No annoying stuff.

Where is all this extra space for email coming from?

The Grand Canyon?
Inside Johnny Mneumonic's head?
The balloon of the renewed zepplin?

Any ideas?

GMAIL is invitation only. I was fortunate to get someone at the webdiscuss forum to send me one so I have a Gmail account now. Accounts are really good, very fast and simple.

Hopefully Google will make it available to everyone soon.

Hard drives are really tiny. The iPod Mini has a 4GB hard disk the size of a quarter. But this question really has two answers:

1. Most people will never put a serious dent in it. But 1GB is bigger than what the other guys have, so it will be one of the main attractions to Gmail, even if you don't need it.

2. More importantly, who's *paying* for all this extra space? And that would be you, the customer, and anyone else exposed to the advertising which I assume will be abundant. I like Google's form of advertising about 100 times better than the flashy, animated, annoying stuff you usually see. I'm a fan of Google in general. They even have a unicycle in their main office, and at least one unicyclist who works there (he was at the first MUni Weekend).

But I don't trust free email or otherwise free Internet services. Because they are free, there is usually no obligation on the part of the company to be consistent with the service. You are at their mercy.

That's why, early on, I decided to buy my own domain, and have my own site and email, under my own control. Yes I have to pay for it, but it will never go away, and I can switch hosting companies as I see fit (which I've done several times).

Note: If you ever do buy your own domain, be sure to buy it separately from your hosting account. Some hosting companies trick you into not really giving you ownership of the domain you paid them to set up. Make sure it's yours and yours alone!

If you've read this far, check out the newest part of my site, which I'm still setting up and have not yet connected to the main site. It's about a thousand times better than Ofoto for displaying my images, and you can still order prints!
