How come I can't see my original post, but I see the replies? And yet I see
much older posts still up?

Because you posted on Usenet and due to some problem at the forum end
your original post didn't propagate until a few days later. In the
meantime, someone replied to your original post and crossposted that
reply to the forum directly. That in turn evoked more replies.

(The 'someone' was actually me.)
