I think a 36er looks more proportional than any other size wheel. I even like wheels larger than that, the semcycle big wheel looks great!
a 20 looks odd and feels squirrelly

That's good, but there's something missing. I know, how about the same pile, only BIGGER!
![]() For me, it's a 6' adult on a 20" that looks out of proportion. But part of this comes from starting out in unicycling at a time where almost everybody was riding 24" wheels; one wheel for everything. It was convenient, if not very specialized. Switching to a 20" wheel after four years had me looking strange with that little wheel under me. Before that, I was already the owner of a 45" wheel. A very different proportion, but looking great in my eyes. Also, that size is a little closer to an actual adult-sized penny-farthing wheel. A 36" penny-farthing is for kids. I like the 36" size; it's a nice adult-sized wheel. I just wish it wasn't so heavy.

I ride a 36 in and I had never seen anyone ride a 36 until I let a kid (who had a 24 in) ride mine. It looked kind of odd. I think most people's perception of a unicycle is someone who rides in a show or circus and juggles bowling pins.

For me the 36 is so much fun to ride, more so than the 20. I love it when people tell me it looks like a Penny Farthing. The only thing I would change would be the thick tyre. A friend of mine told me it looks like a tractor wheel!
A slimmer profile would look a lot more elegant but I suppose that a larger and thinner wheel rim wouldn't be as strong.

I tend to think that all unicycles (especially when being ridden) look silly. It's a weird leg movement, if you look at it from the back. Our feet go out to the side with each pedal stroke.
Part of the reason people think that the 36" is odd is the incongruity with common perception of unicycles. Unicycles are seen as small, toy-like vehicles ridden by performers and hobbyists, to most.

Yeah, people look really silly when they're on 36ers. I've got a nice, respectable Nimbus 26er and/or a Koxx-1 Black Domina 2 that are much better proportioned and make people look downright respectable - anyone want to trade? :-)

I have some 114 cranks for my 36 but haven't installed them yet. I thought the 114's I have on my 26" looked funny, they're going to look super ridiculous on a 36er. I bet Its going to be a whole new ball game to free mount....
