Rode the Hudson Valley Walkway today. The walkway over the Hudson river is getting so crowded that even with my getting there early to beat the rush, its crowded with people along the way. I tried going back to the inland rail trails I used to ride, but with the winter storms, they are closed with trees down crossing the path. Last week I rode one despice being closed, and in the 2 mile ride I had to climb over/around at least 15 trees.

So today at the walkway, I stopped to ask the ranger what plans there are to clear the rail trails. He didn't know. After that, he joked, where's the other wheel, then mentioned that another, younger unicyclist has been riding the walkway. He carefully explained, that my riding that big(36") wheel is good, but that guy on the smaller wheel is really something, doing one foot, hoping, idling... all the really impressive tricks.

Luckily for me I had just happen to have met up with this young rider 2 days ago along the walkway where he was with his parents. It's delta_224 id from Unicyclist.com. delta_224 does ride very well, amazing for the short time he has been riding. I could see just when he first mounted, that he was in control, didn't need to ride off to gain balance, just seemed patient, as if there was no hurry to move at all. He had shown me his one foot riding, and other skills, good thing for me I knew he deserved those high praises.

Riding around the parking lot and building this morning and a liitle girl maybe 6 was with her mom and yelled up to me "You now how to ride a Unicycle?!?!"
When I answered, "Nope not at all, wanna teach me" the girl was dumbfounded and I thought mom was gonna wet herself laughing

Pretty funny! I wonder what the world must be like for someone who just doesn't comprehend that kind of humor......especially the adults!

Not all exactly comments from non-riders, but:

I was out riding through Creekside Park close to our house with my partner & one of our dogs, and some kids (not much older than six) on the playground asked me whether unicycling is hard. I oversimplified a bit and told them, "At first it's really hard, but then it's just really fun!"

Next time I'll have to try to convince them to get their parents to buy them unis. I'd love to see the kids starting to uni around the neighborhood!

When we were finishing up on the Albany Hill trail (across the creek from Creekside Park), there was a man that my partner later told me was staring. At first, she thought he was staring at her, then she thought he must be staring at her large silver poodle--she's used to that. Finally, she told me, she figured out he was staring at me MUniing! She doesn't seem to think MUniing is strange! lol

On the way home I saw a boy who was 4 or 5 years old with training wheels on his tiny bike. As I passed, I told him to keep practicing so he can eventually get rid of all those training wheels. I'm pretty sure he had no clue what I was talking about, but his dad behind him thought it was hilarious.

I love that my method of transportation is something that so easily spreads joy.

On the way home Friday riding by the University, as I passed a couple college girls one said "Wow - Sweet!" I didn't look really closely, but I'm pretty sure she was a total hottie.

Helped at a charity event at a local mall, and did some Giraffe riding in the parking lot. My giraffe is all pimped up with lighted up pedals and a red wheel.

A while later I walked over to the mall to pick something up, and this woman with a 4-year old boy approached me and told me her son wanted to asked me something about my bicycle.

The boy then asked me "what kind of bicycle is that?"
I told him in a very friendly voice: " it is a "Giraffe bicycle".
Me: "Do you know what a giraffe looks like?
Boy: "Yes"
Me: "So why do you think they call my bicycle a giraffe?"
Boy, thinking very hard, and then excitingly getting the answer:
"BECAUSE ITS GOT A RED WHEEL!".

This exchange was in afrikaans, and does not translate into english without loosing most of it's cuteness. The word for bicycle in afrikaans also does not imply 2 wheels, so a "fiets" is anything from a uni to a 3-wheel.

Today I got;

Woman "You've lost some of it."
Me "Nah,just got rid of the non essential parts.
Woman, looking up the trail " you can't ride on that!"
Me "well I just did"

I also got

"I don't feel safe on two, let alone one."

"If we hear you screaming we'll come runnng"

Edit: I also got chased down my road by some kids who were amazed by my unicycle and how I could ride it.

A neighbor came up to me while I was riding and mentioned that he saw me doing something very impressive a few days ago: "Riding on the curb". We have some isolated curb strips that are fun to ride along.

The feedback was nice. However, at the time I was riding along one-footed, which I find much much harder than riding on curbs. It just goes to show that the difficulty of a trick has no correlation to how impressive it looks to the general public.

Non-Verbal Communication

Riding on a sidewalk up a hill with a schoolyard full of noisy children to the right and a stampeding herd of morning traffic on the left I hear...

"Ding Ding Ding"

A road biker on the other side of 6 lanes of traffic has given me a sonic thumbs up. I look across, wave, ride on and the caucophony continues.

On the way home I was coming uphill off a horse trail to rejoin the bike path and another road biker, this time close by, gives me the visual thumbs up.

I had a strange one, perhaps someone can explain what either he meant or what I misheard him to say

I was cycling along a road on my 29" when 2 young guys came out of a shop the first guys said 'Woo, he's only got one wheel'
to which his friend replied 'Did you kill a bear'....
at least he was original

That has to be a reference to Bears on Wheels:

I got my very first "other wheel" type comment this weekend -- guy says "I think I saw the other half of your bike further up the trail." I was hoping to see another unicyclist, but it didn't happen.

On the same ride, I came across a guy walking with his kids on bikes. The smallest was a girl about 4 years old, on a tiny bike with training wheels. As I approached, she pointed and said "Daddy, look!" Then as I went by on my Coker, waaaay above her, I asked "How do you ride with all those wheels?" She got a very confused look on her face, which made the Dad laugh and say "And he's got a sense of humor, too!"

Funny, I got a similar one from a stranger who cheerfully said, "you're on two wheels".

When I was "chicken pecking" up a steep slope to a footbridge over a highway, a woman I passed stopped in her tracks and said, "You must have the strongest legs in North Bay." Yeah, I wish.

Same ride, I rode a rough trail around a playground. A teenage girl, 14ish, sitting on top of a climbing frame yelled, "Mrs Unicycle lady, I love you.". I then had to ride in a little circle while some pedestrians crossed another footbridge (oh, how I would have loved to be able to idle instead), and the same girl asked if she could have a ride of my unicycle. I stopped by a lamppost, and gave her a little lesson while her friends tittered and used their cellphones to channel the girl's experience straight to the internet. I hope I planted a seed that will one day blossom.
