Capture the Moment Photo Contest is Live!

Hey,

I'm very happy to announce the launch of the Capture The Moment photo contest!

Visit capture.krisholm.com (or click here) for details, contest rules, and to start entering photos. In brief:

There are 3 photo categories - Action, Culture and Landscape. Once you have set up an account, you can enter up to 3 photos total (ie. one per category, or more than one in one or two categories). The number of photos is limited to 3 because the intent is to gather together and share the best photos of our sport.

Any logged-in user can rate photos by giving them 1-5 stars. Photos are scored using a statistical method that is based on the average star rating and number of votes. Specific details on the scoring method are at the About page.

At the end of the contest period, the photos with the highest score in each category are the winners. The first contest period will run from today until March 31, 2010.

Sincere thanks go to to Carl Hoyer for being the genius behind the site architecture and for putting huge effort into building the site.

Also, very big thanks go to Unicycle.com for sponsoring the prizes.

Note - photo entries are manually moderated (approved) before they can display on the site. That means that if you upload a photo, you will not see it right away. Thanks in advance for your patience on this.

Hmm, I tried submitting a photo three times now, but it just redirects to a page that says "You don't have access here". Is the site working for anyone else?

As for the "You don't have access here" error message on entry submission. I am aware of an issue, and working to resolve it, in which the friendly field validation messages aren't displayed.

If you submit an entry in which ALL the required fields are filled out (title, category, riding style, photo (between 1 - 5MB ) & required terms checkboxes) you should not receive this error. A number of entries have already been submitted.

I'm very interested in hearing peoples feedback about the site. It's been a labour of love over the past several months with some interesting challenges.

Are photos the only images allowed in the contest? Not artwork done by brush or pen?

Interesting idea. I never thought about this possibility, but I don't see why not. There's no special category for art, but as long as it otherwise meets the criteria for photos in the terms and conditions (e.g. unicycle themed, not offensive etc) then it would be welcome. Scans should be 1-5 Mb in size.

Do you have to go back to the gallery each time to veiw the next photo? Or is there an easier way to go through them that I am just missing?

Navigating directly from one photo to the next is on the to-do list.

Thanks, it worked for me now (my image was a few kb under a mb so I had to dig up an original). I added a suggestion to the site you posted above dealing with character limit validation on the description field.

The site looks good, the tag feature is really neat and was a great front-end user experience creating new tags.

Until this feature is added, you can increment/decrement the URL in your browser. Like this:

I keep trying to sign up, but whenever I click 'sign up', it tells me there was one error, and that error being:
"Login use only letters, numbers, and .-_@ please." (the error is with the first category, "Name, your full name.")

I'm just typing my full name in, so just letters and a space between my first and last name. Has anyone here had the same problem and been able to fix it?
