Today I finally felt good enough to ride again, being sick SUCKS!
anyway, today I ... managed to land a fakie rolling hop off a curb (really amazed myself that I got this). Also landed a couple of 180's off the curb and rode away. Backwards is still shakey, but the full revs back and forwards has really helped (thanks Waaalrus). Hopefully the weather will break a bit, it's been NASTY wet. |

Today I: just got back from a 3-day mountain bike festival at our local trails... but sadly I don't qualify for this thread as I've been riding muni for many years.

Today I:
Idled 65 times with my bad foot then rode away. (New Record!) I've been crazy busy. Not much time for unicycle fun.

Yesterday I went on a 6.5 mile ride. Longest ride yet, and improves my confidence for continuing to uni-commute (until the snow flies, anyhow). I'm taking a bit different approach than all you idlers extraordinaire, but so far just riding is keeping me amused, and I expect it will make the rest easier when I get around to putting my focus on some new skills.

a real beginner
I went up my first hill and couldn't believe how much strength it took to get up it. It has to get easier as I get better. I want to know how not to sit on my balls when mounting. I might just start wearing a cup. Seriously, what the hell do the rest of you do??? I just saw a suicide mount video and the guy must be a eunuch!

Anton - I'd be up for that of course. I'll go ahead and start practicing.
Mountain Shooter - Everyone agrees that padded cycle shorts are highly recommended for protecting the nads. It made a night and day difference for me. The other main thing, perhaps even more important, is mounting technique. When mounting (assisted or freemounting) you learn how to gradually put your weight on the seat. At the same time, you wiggle/fenagle yourself however is necessary to position your stuff in front as opposed to underneath yourself. This is obviously an aquired skill that becomes automatic with time. On the same topic, people that hop or jump off objects or do suicide mounts don't land on the seat. They land on the pedals and/or cranks. Regarding the suicide mount video recently posted - THAT DUDE IS A MANIAC!

Mountain Shooter- As far as the hills goes, you just need to keep trying, it's all about the new muscle coordination. It actually comes pretty quick as long as you ride a bit every day. For mounting, you kind of place your weight on the seat from the rear to the front, thus forcing your boys into the correct place. As super G said it takes time to figure out and it's pretty much the only downside of the sport, well that and the scars on your shins.
SuperG- I managed to get one sip while idling, a few ounces of liquid in a cup in your hand really throws off your balance. I kept falling to the side I was holding the cup on. It actually is really good practice, maybe water might be a better thing to practice with But when your taking a sip of "liquid" while idling it's pretty cool, your totally concentrating on taking the drink (trying not to spill) and idling seems to actually be happening on auto pilot. I will keep trying, I had a few before I tried which obviously didn't help at all. Riding down the street while sucking down a beer was no problem at all and you kinds out there... you stick to koolaid or lemonade! |
