petit_pierre's friend has obviously never heard the "Captain Scarlett" theme. A Timpani (aka kettle drum) often has a pedal which can be pressed to alter the pitch of the drum, by tightening the tension rods that hold the skin of the drum in place.

As for the "a drum is not a musical instrument, it's a percussion instrument" argument, does that mean that all percussion instruments are not musical instruments? Xylophones, glockenspiels and bells are percussion instruments that make music. Technically, the piano is a percussion instrument too.
