Lefties vs righties
Hi I'm new to the forum. Was discussing Uni-ing with my buddy dave (GILD) over some beers and we came up with this vexing question. So I thought I'd make it my first posting on the forum
We were wondering if anyone can varify the truth of a comment I heard a couple of years back that if you are right handed you are more than likely to be left footed and vise versa. Im right handed and left footed so it works for me but I don't know why this should be the case. Can anyone explain? We thought the poll would be interested to see how many other left footers/right handers and vise versa there are out there (MIXED) and how many completly left or completly right handed AND footed people there are (ONE SIDED). I'm right handed and hop with my right foot forward with all other activites I use my right foot. But it seems that most riders how with their left foot forward. So does that mean I'm Mixed?

The large majority of people will be what you are calling mixed, it is the most natural physical reaction because it balances you body in most activities.
For instance if you are right handed and go for a lay-up in basketball you will leave off your left foot because that is the foot that balances your body better since you are leading with your right hand. If you throw a ball with your right hand you will pivot off your left foot because that is the foot that will keep you body in balance most naturally. What I am saying is that foot dominance is a factor of hand dominance, and it will always be the opposite foot in 99% of activites. |

I think I read the term 'mixed' incorrectly when I voted in the poll. I'm mixed depending on what I'm doing. First off, I'm right handed. I kick a ball balancing on my left foot, and throw a ball with my left foot forward. When skateboarding/snowboarding though, I ride with my right foot forward (termed 'goofy foot'). I parallel stop best on skates/skis with my left foot forward. I tend to jump best with my right foot forward. So I haven't figured out which foot I favor.. Can anybody help?

I'm still getting the hang of hopping, but I find that hopping with my left foot forward is easier (I'm right handed). This is largely because it's easier for me to come to a still-stop using my right foot as the "brake".

I'm left handed and I mount with my left foot on the pedal first (or at least I try). So I guess that makes me one sided. But mostly I think I am just confused! Being left handed with mostly right handed teachers, I was often taught to do most sports right handed, and ended up being able to do things just as clumsily either way. When I run hurdles I lead with my right foot. When I attempt a layup in basketball I usually throw with my right hand. So I don't know what that makes me!??

I'm right handed. I mount with my left foot first (back) and right foot second (forward). I link to my saddle with my left hand when hopping.

Andrew-
Any friend of Dave's is a friend of mine. Your original poll and post are too vague to answer. You're also collecting data from a very small cross section which would make drawing conclusions dicey at best. I would look at Gild, decide which profile he best fits, and assume the rest of the world is just like him or will be wise enough to soon follow.

I am normaly right handed and learn most of my unicyle tricks with right foot dominat (mounting R foot first etc) but as soon as I learn to do it one way, I try to learn it left foot first.
However, I cannot play unicyle hockey right handed. I always hold the end of the stick up top with R hand and the L halfway down. I seem to be unable to do it the otherway round. This is odd because I cannot play tennis, squash or write left handed. The Fool
