Sex-Ed

So at my school we just got done with our sex unit in health class. The thing that I hate about it is that our curriculum is focused on abstinence. We didn't discuss contraception at all, and to sum up what they "taught us" for a month in three words would be something like "don't do it." Now I'm all for telling kids not to have sex because they won't get an STD or pregnant, but I am totally opposed our teacher just teaching about abstinence.

We didn't get taught about the benefits of not choking, but what to do if someone is choking.

We didn't just get taught how to avoid injury, but what to do if someone is injured.

Oh yeah. On the last day of health a "doctor" came in and told us that at best, condoms only protect against STD's 25% of the time. He also added that HIV could get through a condom, so condoms didn't help at all with HIV.

He was also giving statistics that only 10% of teens know how to put a condom on (as a pro-abstinence argument), yet he also said he is against teaching teens how to use condoms

And another thing is that my health teacher makes it sound like it is extremely easy to get an STD (Like 100% of the time), even though somewhere else I read that the chances of getting an STD from unprotected sex with someone who has an STD is something like 1 in 500.

Opinions?

Weird, when I had my sex-ed class it was nothing like that.

We studied anatomy and all this other stuff and the advantages and disadvantages of condoms and all of that stuff.

I'm with you. Teens are going to have sex, period. I think they should give out condoms in the schools, it is not really going to increase the number of peopel having sex.

I think that 1 and 500 satistic is wrong, I don't know though. I think if those were the chanses they would have not made such a big deal about it. Maybe 1 and 50?

Have you ever seen the movie Mean Girls?

From the Health class:

"Don't have sex, because if you have sex, you WILL get pregnant, and DIE.
Just, don't do it, okay?
Now, everybody take some rubbers."

also, for my actual opinion...the only thing that Abstinence education does it insures that those who are going to have sex, will be doing so unsafely.

I agree with you that there should be more taught than just abstinence, but these arguments don't work. Choking and injuries happen by accident. Have you ever heard of someone accidentally having sex?

My high school sex ed class was more like a human anatomy class than a "health" class.

Ok well what about like an ocean swimming class (if they exist)?

You would be taught about dangerous currents or shark (sex) and how to swim safely (sex with protection).

Yes swimming (sex) is dangerous and can be avoided, but most people will do it.

But if swimmers are not taught about the specific dangers (and how to avoid them) of ocean swimming, it would be even more dangerous.

Right?

Just be thankful you apparently have the brains to realise when you're being lied to, it's probably going to happen quite alot in school in the coming years.

I don't think there needs to be an analogy to justify teaching more than just abstinence. You just need to pull your head out of the sand and see what teenagers are actually doing. The idea that we can prevent teens from having sex by not teaching them about it is ridiculous, at least in this age of mass media and the Internet.

I was just thinking about how smart he really is for a 13 yr old, I am very impressed, I get the grammer police on my arse every time I make a post. Im very glad to see there are people in schools who are still questioning the teachings rather than just becoming a drone of which society is trying to create...

The people who don't question anything just end up praying to god and constantly complain about climate change. (one guy I know on the bus counts the 4 by 4s he sees on his way to school.) we need more threads like this one.

And I thought we Brits were screwed up about sex! I recall the the boys and girls were separated to make it easier to ask questions without embarrassment or something. I theorised that the girls were being introduced to the mysteries of the Dutch cap...

Don't these moralising morons realise that kids these days are all Internet savvy? I recall that buying the damn things in person without my ears burning was the really tricky part :-)

It seems a great tragedy (and also counter-productive) to me that sex is treated so stupidly at school. It is your *parents'* business to instil in you whatever attitudes they regard as appropriate, and no doubt they have done so. IMO the school should just be making sure you've got your facts straight.
