maestro8 pointed out to me that I've been slashdotted. Usually it's considered a good thing, though I'm still trying to figure out if it is or not.

I'm really not surprised. I see people using tinyurl about everyday. It's popular among the bicycling mailing lists that I subscribe to, since long urls don't always work well in e-mail.

When you get mentioned on the front page of Slashdot.org you can get a LOT of traffic. They like to joke about their ability to bring down a server due to the sudden traffic load of all the Slashdot members going to the site at the same time. And they have crashed servers before due to the Slashdot effect.

Nobody over there reads the articles so it's doubtful you got any extra traffic to TinyURL because of it. ;-^)

So now people are going to try to store their porn in the TinyURL database. Tis an abuse of the database even if it's not explicitly stated as such in the TOS.

Hmmm... they might not read, but they do click the ads.

I did check /. earlier today, but missed the mention of TinyURL on it.

No... the database hasn't grown much as a result... not nearly the 50 GB in a day the guy mentioned in his presentation when he anticipated that it'd be posted on slashdot.
