RedBull UK 2004

Just got this information:

"Fans of 24-hour races should unleash their 2004 diaries, as the first two organisers off the blocks have announced details of their events - and there are changes afoot...

First up, the legendary Saab Salomon Mountain Mayhem moves from its traditional home of Sandwell Park, Birmingham to the hillier area of Eastnor Deer Park, Herefordshire. Old-school racers will remember Eastnor as the home of the Malvern Hills Classic, and a sizable hill with a monument on top. Should make a change from the relatively low-lying Sandwell, and it's a lovely spot too. The dates are 25-27 June 2004 - visit www.mountain-mayhem.co.uk for more details."

So who whats to play?

Cheers

Roger

I was just talking to Scot Cooper today about this and it looks like we'll both be able to come over for it. So have any of you guys got any knowledge about the new venue? The obvious question is should we bring Cokers, 29" or Muni? Would it be possible for a 12 year old to enter? Beau has been accepted at the Toronto event, but can't race in our local 24 Hours of Adrenalin event due to their 14 year age limit.

Also I am thinking of splurging on a new light system this year (since I need two now that Beau is racing with us). I am thinking of buying the Netrider Cyclone - what do you think about this one? Is it possibly too bright? I have no experience riding with HID. Anyone?

Finally, are any of you guys going solo specifically at RedBull?

Looking forward to 2004 as the year of many 24 hours events!

It's more hilly than the old course, so 29ers might be the thing to have. Still only up to about 200 metres, nothing massive.

Click the link below and then click dead in the middle of the "+...-" scale to see the contours.

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap...237500&A=Y&Z=5

In previous years it's been over 18s only, so Beau probably won't be able to enter.

I like a light system that you can turn down for riding on the road at night, so I use halogen. However, all the bike people I've met who had HID systems liked theirs, one small thing is that its a bit hard to ride with other riders if they don't have HID and you do, as you'll totally out power their lights even on a low setting.

I think runtime is the most important thing for unicycle lights, 6 hours looks like plenty (unless you're thinking of doing solo overnight rides in winter), I've done full overnight rides in spring and summer and only used 4 or 5 hours of light. On normal night rides I rarely use more than 3.5 hours worth.

Thanks - very good info. One of the comments says that this event always fills up and it's first-come-first-served. How are you guys handling applications etc? When does it usually fill up?

It filles up the day the forms are released normally. But.... tell me if you are coming and we have a word with Pat, he like to have unicyclists and he knows we may be having some international teams entering. We will do our best to be sure that you have the entries you need.

Nathan,

I feel the best lighting system available is the Phantom by Jetlites. Check it out at www.jetlites.com/psb.html

Based on previous years, the lower age limit for the mountain mayhem is
18. Insureance issues and that sort of thing I believe. However he would
be able to ride the course the day before or in the morning before the
race starts and there are generally a number of other lads hanging about
waiting for dad and messing about on the campsite.

Thumbs up

Yes, I'll be there, albeit a harder ride than last year. Those contours look a little scary though!! I think I need to add another uni to my collection. Mark & Roger, let my know which parts you recommend for me to build a 29". Mark: I hope you're up for another "Mountain Mayhem". I think Wendy's up for this more than I am - mind you she's only supporting.

Have a good Xmas guys. See you in Kidderminster.

I'll be there. Steve Robertson is also interested. I don't think Alan
will be doing it this year - although there's always time for him to be
persuaded...

I can't run. You know that. Who's hiding? Just back from 2 weeks away
from email. :-)

Regards,
Mark.

I'm up for riding this year.

In a team I think, unless I feel super fit by the time the application forms come out.

Alan, Tim and I used...

KH seat, 28" Nimbus 2 frame, 36h Van Schothorst Saphir 700c stainless
steel rim 29mm outside to outside (from www.sjscycles.com), WTB
Motoraptor tyre, WTB 29" tube and a Suzue hub. With the recent quality
problems on the Suzue you'd be better off with a different hub.

I'll be there.

Based on Wendy's previous supporting roles, she'll be putting in more
effort than us. :-}

Mark.

Thanks for that Mark. I'd better get ordering. See you next week at Kidderminster.
