The Unicycling Society of America is still soliciting hosts for the 2003 NUC
(NAUC, NAUCC). It's not really a "NUC" any more, as it's officially North
American. No takers yet. How about Puerto Rico? I suggested this to David
Ramos recently, with tongue in cheek, and he responded that they were
actually very interested. Hey, it's gotta happen somewhere.

The location of our convention has been determined by who is willing to host
it. In those rare instances when we have had two or more groups vying to
host in a given year, we try to either pick the location that most evenly
"spreads" the conventions around, or the host who appears to be more ready.
More often, however, we are unable to line up hosts with less than one year
lead time. Ultimately I would like to see us planning 3-5 years in advance,
giving convention hosts more time to prepare for their events.

As our conventions continue to get bigger, they become harder to produce,
and they really need organized groups of people to make them work
successfully. Though a convention can be hosted by a small group, as was
ably shown by the Toronto Unicyclists in 2001, a bigger group of workers
makes for much less stress on the individual people.

The USA should perhaps take a larger role in organizing these conventions.
We have plenty of people with knowledge and expertise, gained from many
years' experience in how our conventions work. this should be used more in
making future conventions better. I foresee a time when local hosts
primarily are responsible for acquiring facilities in which to hold the
events, but the USA organizes the more specialized requirements, such as
competition officials, judges referees, etc. And perhaps helps with fund
raising.

If people are interested in forming a USA convention committee, I would
strongly encourage it. This would make it much easier for local clubs and
groups to take on the task of hosting future conventions.

I am thinking of offering a workshop at the conventions this summer with a
subject along these lines, how to improve our conventions, and how to help
people have better ones. But don't wait until then. If you think the USA
should have such a committee, I encourage you to volunteer.

Stay on top,

I look out my window into the dreary drizzle of the Pacific Northwest and I realize, suddenly, that David Ramos and Puerto Rico are ready and, when I squint my eyes properly, they are even centrally located. And NAUCC should be held in March that year.

David-

Mas temprano aviso, por favor.

This is a perfect time to go to the Carribean. What isn't, though.

Re: Nuc 2003?

Since there's no Unicon that year, a trip to Puerto Rico sounds perfect.
I've always wanted to visit there. That would be great if you guys can do
it.
