I thought it might be interesting to start a thread on what people are reading: what are you reading, what do you think of it, and why? I spend at least two hours per day reading for pleasure, and am always interested in what other people are reading and what they recommend. I'm not sure there is any such thing as unicycling literature, but if there is - let's hear about it.

I will start the ball rolling.

Right now, I am about four pages into Cormac McCarthy's "Suttree". I had never read any of his work until I saw the movie "No Country for Old Men", which I really enjoyed, both as a portrait of a psychopath, and a comment upon the difficulty in distinguishing between opportunistic and irresponsible (but well meaning) behaviour and psychopathy. I read the book, and found it to be an equally enjoyable exploration of the same themes. I was fascinated by how closely the dialogue in the book matched the screenplay, as that is (in my experience) very unusual.

Once I find an author interesting, I tend to read a lot of their work. I subsequently read most of what I could get of McCarthy's work and was particularly impressed (more than impressed, breathless in the face of such literary virtuosity) by some of his - almost abstract - descriptive passages in particular, in "Blood Meridian".

I moved on and was reading other stuff, when I came across a review that mentioned some of his earlier work, and was particularly complementary about "Suttree", so when I saw it in a bookstore yesterday, I picked it up.
The first couple of pages have left me gasping for air: I could read them over and over. It is a brilliantly poetic descriptive passage describing a fisherman fishing from a skiff in the oily waters of an industrial estuary. (I think that's what it's about... I've only read the first few pages.) If this thread has legs, I will say more in the future.

So... What are you reading?

So I have been seeing this chick for a while [about 2 months] and story is as follows:

So, on Friday night me and a mate went to an Aussie Hip Hop show and she didn't come coz she's not into that music.

I caught up with her on Saturday when she finished work and spend the rest of the day/night with her.

Everything was all good, and I dropped her off at work Sunday morning then saw her again Sunday arvo.

I went round to hers last night and we went for a drive, when we stopped at a park she kinda looked at me and looked upset... I asked if everything was ok and she burst into tears... She had told me she went to a friends place on Fri night and got mega para and thought her drink may have been spiked [she told me on Sat when I saw her - she has bruises on her arm and didnt know how they got there]... And that she hooked up with someone... I then proceeded to ask how far they went and she said all the way...
At first I comforted her tears and asked her some more questions, then I think it must've sunk in and I went quiet and shakey and sh*t.

The story is there was only one couch to sleep on and she got on it was he then jumped on and it 'just happened' - I found out also that he went in with no dom.
No matter how drunk I am, I can control that sh*t.
If she can still remember surely she would've had enough control to say no?

I know she is sorry, and she said it wouldn't happen again [she was balling pretty much the whole time], but I said what if you get that drunk and out of control again? She said she wouldn't but I said you didn't plan on it then either...
After a bit I dropped her home, I came home myself and went to my room and cracked a bottle.
I just have no idea what to do... Part of me is saying f her off and she can't be trusted...

I am meant to be going to a party with her on Saturday night, and apparently this bloke is gunna be there... Not sure if I still wanna go or not in case I start something.
He is lucky she has claimed to not know his last name, or I have a crew that would mess him up well and good - or if he wasn't too big I'd have a crack myself... But ARGH... This whole trust issue is there now... Yes, she told me...

Also, the night I first met her she wanted it off me - being the first time I met her I said no... So maybe she did initiate it? I have sent her a message asking if that was the case... If she says no then I still dunno... But if she says yes then I'm tellin her no deal.

The shame of it: I fell off my two wheeler today. All that needless complexity turned round and bit me.:o

The bike is a single speed roadbike with smooth 700c x 23mm tyres and there was me going down this grassy floodbank about to get onto the official bike path, when the wheel got caught in the timber edging of the path and tracked with it, and suddenly I was flat on my side, my mobile phone (in my breast pocket) digging into my ribs, and my knee and hand both grazed. How I laughed.

But in an otherwise pleasant ride we saw:

A kingfisher - one of the real jewels of the British bird population, and unexpected in an urban setting: the canal that cuts through Nottingham. Kingfishers nest in burrows in sandy banks, and all around here is brick and concrete.:)

Then a rare sighting indeed: hiding among the mallards was a bird I cou;ld not recall seeing before. Duck like, but with a distinctively large head and a strangely-shaped orangey red bill. A bit of research when I got home revealed it to be a red-crested pochard. According to the RSPB handbook, there are only about 50 breeding pairs in the whole UK.

Apart from that, all the usual stuff, including a nice sighting of a cormorant.:)

The photos attached are from Google Images, just to illustrate. I didn't have the chance to take photos.

Well, I feel certain this has been discussed in the Most Replys (sic) threads somewhere, but too bad.

2012 is an awesome movie. Way too long, incredibly cheesy, but everything you want in a blockbuster action disaster end of the freakin'world movie. Massive explosions, questionable science, continents sinking, multiple near misses that defy probability, stereotypes, giant impossible technological developments, death on a scale so huge you really don't know whether to laugh or cry, a heroic if geeky plastic surgeon, and it actually managed to deliver one decent performance by one actor.

If you love everything that is good and decent and American about disaster movies, you won't be disappointed.
