The single-speed bike fraternity have established an annual event – the Single Speed World Championships - a world champs with a difference, that is being held in South Africa in 2012. It has built up quite a following with devotees travelling worldwide to attend.

As a weekend-long event, it is not entirely serious. Wearing silly clothing is mandatory; at the main race there is a Le-Mans start where the bikes are mixed up by the organisers and shortcuts are allowed if you have a beer. The race winners get a tattoo – your choice where! There are also a range of other activities as part of the event well.

A group of muni riders in SA - 10 of us so far, have entered to enjoy the fun and also hopefully add another element to the whole event. People who eschew gears, freewheels (well, some of them) and enjoy cycling offroad the less-easy-way are as close to unicycling as you can get without losing a wheel. The organisers welcomed our entries and are keen on getting international riders as well. We are hoping that munis can become part of future SSWCs – starting in SA in 2012.

The SSWC2012 is being held in SA in Winterton, bordering the Drakensburg Mountains from 28 to 30 Sept. Entries are limited to 1000 and over 400 have been taken up so far.
