Google will be releasing a new url shortening service known as Goo.gl. Right now it is being used just in the google toolbar and the feedburner app but if they open it up to all uses then the future may not be looking too bright for Gilby's TinyURL.
What do you computer nerds think?

Did Gilby apply for any copyright protection?
Did Gilby not just sell TinyURL to Google?

What DID Gilby do? Will Gilby speak up? Who knows?
If he changes his username to Gl.by, we'll know.

Gilby is so rich now... he doesnt need to speak to us, he lets other people deal with the common folk.

Just because google makes something doesn't mean it will kill tinyurl.
Because of twitter there are only a milion new services exactly like this.
I'd be interested to see exactly how the site traffic has goneup or down depending on twitters popularity.

According to Facebook, Gilby is currently in New Zealand.
I say we raid his drinks cabinet.

This is just a ploy by Google to try to get me to install their toolbar to be able to try the new service. Not gonna happen. Needing a special toolbar to use a web service is so 1999.
... is so 1999.
Time to party then?

Figures they'd wait until he left the country to unveil it. Fraidy cats.

Deal.
You had me at "Inflatable sheep".
Man, Gilby just has a load of junk food in his fridge, I thought he ate healthier than that.

Needing a special toolbar to use a web service is so 1999.Amen to that. Never used a browser toolbar, except plug-ins to help with Web design or similar.
Just wanted to let you know, JC, that I saw a 5' tall glass of Guinness dancing in the middle of the street in Rotorua today. Badly. I took a picture just for you, but can't edit them until I get home. I'm shooting all RAW, and the computer we brought with us is a Dell Vostro A90 running Mac OS X 10.5. Works great but not much SSD space or power...

I'm a week exactly away from Rotorua. Whoohoo!

Speaking of which, could someone please return all those animated GIFs? We're experiencing a shortage.

When you see Gilby, tell him the pizza in the fridge has gone off, and that his freezer needs defrosting.
And that he's out of beer.

You're hallucinating. Next thing you know you'll be seeing sheep in the streets.
Mmmmm, dancing Guinness. I sometimes see faces in the beautiful bubble cascade as the Guinness settles.

As for the Guinness sighting, it was a little street festival. A group of women were doing an everybody's welcome Zumba demonstration. It's like aerobics to salsa music. Anyway, apparently the Guinness guy's "handler" made him go out there and participate, which the Guinness glass was clearly not excited about...
Today we did Zorb, the Agrodome and Schweeb. Look them up to learn more!

No. Kidding is for goats. Sheeps are serious and don't kid around.
Have fun in NZ, and watch out for the crazy birds.

So, what is this "tinyurl" you all speak of? I feel confused.
john_childs
2009-12-19, 11:29 PM
TinyURL (http://tinyurl.com/) is a URL shortener service developed by Gilby. It's useful for keeping really long URLs from wrapping in email messages and newsgroup messages. Also useful for making really long URLs, like Google Street View links, manageable if you need to write them down or Tweet them.
My understanding of the history is that TinyURL came from a need Gilby had when setting up the forums here and linking it to the RSU newsgroup. There needed to be a way to keep long URLs posted in the forum from word wrapping when sent to the newsgroup. TinyURL to the rescue. From there it became an internet sensation and keeps Gilby's fridge stocked with beer.

Apparently bit.ly is used more now, especially on Twitter, but I think Gilby's changed the way tinyurl works to match the features and advantages of bit.ly.
I still use Tinyurl, because Gilby's awesome :)

Tinyurl is way better than bit.ly from a privacy standpoint.
bit.ly makes it way too easy for the link creator and anyone else to get statistics on how many clicks a particular bit.ly link got, along with when and where. That's TMI for general use. Makes it too easy to track if you've opened a link.
Tinyurl has the way cool preview feature. So it's possible to see where a tinyurl link goes before it actually sends you there. Very handy that.

Privacy? That's SO 1998! ;)
