My son, Javier is an accomplished rider with lots of experience. He has worked
in a 8' 8" giraffe between kids.
About 4 years ago, he was in a small temporary fair (on foot, he did not have
his unicycle) with a friend. They were riding a ferris wheel, when the safety
bar broke. The gravitational force threw them both out, about 26 feet high.
Javier's friend landed in the curb. He had brain surgery to remove blood clots.
He is OK now, but lost forever his knee bone. Javier landed feet first. After
been airborne, he was able to take a hold on a permanent bar, swing back to the
roof of the next car and from there to the landing platform.
My point is that you can explain to your parents that unicycling is fun, and it
will also develop some skills that may benefit you in the future.
It should be safe if you learn the skills in order. The IUF Skill levels can
help. In other words, do not try to learn a skill that is way over your
skill level.
