... apparently all the zunes were supposed to die yesterday or today ... until ... well pretty soon... but idk why?
its pretty weird.

oh, almost forgot, they will turn back on today ... in a few hours actually...

Something about the clock in them being messed up because of the leap year. Everyone with the 30gig Zune has the problem. I think its hilarious.

Microsoft. Duh!
The only fix would have been to not make those pieces of crap at all. Especially not in such appropriate colors.

Haha I had to google "Zune" just to find out what it is! Looks like Apple may have some decent competition; that's a good thing it should bring prices down! I especially like the HUGE video screen and supposedly very good quality playback. I'm liking the Zune 80. Largest video screen and has 80GB hard drive
Up to 20,000 songs, 25,000 pictures, or 250 hours of video.

They are both the same proprietary pieces of crud.
If I were to get a new ipod or a zune, id go with a zune though. Unless I was getting an old ipod, cause id rockbox it right away.

and how is the IPOD not? your battery is programmed to die after a specific certain amount of time.
i worked at circuit city, and even w/ all the crap i had to earn by selling ipods i liked the zune 10x more than the ipod... and the samsung players killed everything, but only came up to 8 gb while i was working there
and $100 for a white (not brown!) 30gb zune is a deal that i somehow managed to pull off.... and can't be beat.

Haha yeah they seem to be totally unbiased...except when it comes to Apple! Look at the name of the site: anything but ipod.
You may also note that they don't review Apple products.

You may also note that they don't review Apple products.Yeah, that's my point! Why are they singling out Apple for non-review? Could it be that they think Ipods are so critic-proof that they don't need to include them, or the reverse?

Ipod still holds about 70% of the current mp3 player sales though. I think.
Once people want more and expand out of their box I think ipod will go down a bit, but I doubt thats ever going to happen. When i say what I dont like about itunes and ipods people look at me like im crazy. Luckily for me its them who are the ones missing out.

The site is run by people who strongly feel that ipods are overhyped and overpriced.
While that may or may not be the case, there certainly are enough ipod reviews on the interwebs, so I don't mind their omission.

uh
good luck w/ that... but i had a sandisk (funny lookin one... about 40 bucks 1 or 2 gigs) and it flew out of my pocket on my bike, swung on the headphone cord and smacked a wall at full speed on my bike... i picked it up and it was still playing... that was about 2 years ago, and it still works.

The Sansa Clip (http://www.sansa.com/players/sansa_clip) gets good reviews for sound quality.
It's missing gapless playback.

The 30GB Zune bug is funny in a "I hope that never happens to a product I work on sort of way". I do software QA. You just hope that a bug like that never makes it out. But it happens.
Fortunately that one fixes itself on its own after 24 hours and the battery drains.

Yeah, that's my point! Why are they singling out Apple for non-review?I didn't read the site in-depth, but I get the impression they are there to give attention to all the other players on the market since the iPods are so dominant.
BTW on their homepage there are articles about the details of the Zune bug:

the ones that came out 2 years ago were programmed to have battery failures at 13 months Do you have any links to corroborate your nonsense? Apple fans bitch loudly when stuff like that happens so if nobody's talked about it online, you're making it up. I'm not a fan of a non-user-replaceable battery, but I've never heard of one that's programmed to die. My iPods (3) have never had batter problems, but they were mostly used with car adapters or docked.

You pretty much said what I was going to say.
Check something out by Sansa or Creative. Both offer cheap, decent storage and sturdy devices. You wont be hogged down to any software either.

no, i've got no links, but i had a bunch of customers (i was working at circuit city) who's batter randomly died on thier Ipod just after the warranty expired... and heard it from a co-worker when i worked at circuit city.

An iPod that is synced, charged, and played almost every day would have a shorter than average battery life. I wonder if that usage scenario would work out to the battery lasting just beyond the warranty period?

I hate knowing more about a product than the guy in the store who's trying to answer my questions by reading the box...
How many things crap out right after the warranty expires? It's like one of those Murphy's Law things. Or I guess it's evidence that they figured out the warranty period pretty well. :p But yes, a dead iPod battery would be a pain. Do most of the other players on the market have user-changeable batteries?
If shopping for a non-iPod player, I noticed this best-of-2008 list (http://www.anythingbutipod.com/archives/2008/12/top-5-mp3-players-of-2008.php) on the anythingbutipod site.
