The fact of the matter is the vice president shouldn't be spoken about much before the election. It should be all about the president to be. But Sarah Palin is so outlandish, so unqualified, so idiotic, that more people are talking about her in a negitive sense. I'm sure most republicans are happy just for the attention. The McCain and Palin campaign is such a joke, and long shot to win, that that group is doing everything is their power to save themselves. Um... Sarah is going on SNL where she is basically mocked beyond "niceness". Joe Biden is a legit vice president who has experience and knows what he is doing. I'm sure republicans will make fun of him for where he stands, just because that's poltics. But the dems can make fun of Sarah just because I truely believe the majority of us are smarter than her in almost everything.

The american dream is that anyone, even just some average joe (or jess) can do anything they want, even be president. The american dream is NOT that when a person becomes president (or vice president) that they are still that average joe (or jess). That's not who I want running my country.

Along with a smattering of a certain someone's admonitions to use the search function (http://www.unicyclist.com/forums/search.php?searchid=760153).

Am I on topic? I really don't know. I suspect there is something coded in this thread, but I'm unable to interpret it. Or am I just a victim of some unfortunate tendency or one who perpetuates it?

Just watched the debate, where in one part they talked about their running mates. Barak really held back when it came to the rebuttal part! McCain criticized a number of Biden foreign policy decisions that he didn't agree with. Obama did not have this luxury with Palin, who has never made a foreign policy decision.

It's not all about foreign policy, of course, but shouldn't a potential president of this country have at least a little?

Oh, and when Obama was talking about Biden, the CNN viewers were falling asleep. He's definitely not as exciting to talk about as Palin. The CNN version of the debate has that "EKG" of reaction by a group of "uncommitted Ohio voters" as they watch. It gives a little more to look at besides just the talking heads.

Trivia note:
Hofstra University was the site of the dorms and food for Unicon II in 1986. The track was at neighboring Mitchel Athletic Complex, and the gym was at Nassau Community College (all within walking/riding distance).

What good is foreign policy experience when that experience is with a failed foreign policy and they want to essentially continue that policy?Presumably it means they've at least met some people and gotten some background, and, like, not just looked across the Bering Sea at Russia with binoculars.

But yes, experience alone does not make for an expert, and also does not necessarily make for your favorite candidate. You might like someone with less experience (I'm still not going to say zero though) if you believe they will take the country in the direction you think is better than the other guy's plan.

It's not difficult to understand Palin; she's as deep as an application of lipstick.

Biden is not spectacular, in my opinion; I'm glad he's the VP candidate and not the presidential candidate. However, during the vice-presidential debate, it was apparent that Biden, while I disagree with many of his opinions, is a rational, thinking human being who has carefully considered the issues and policies in question.
Palin, in contrast, evidenced herself as a mindless parrot whose sole function is to distract voters with her brightly colored feathers and atonal screeching, and to whom I would not trust the governance of a local PTA, let alone a "nukular" arsenal.

I think of it like celebrity news. A famous celebrity can do some charity work, and get a brief mention in the news or paper. Another goes out and illegally partys, get in a fight with the paparazzi, and runs a few red lights, and that gets the cover and weeks worths of stories. Biden is celb 1, palin is celeb 2.

He doesn't need one because the company holds the license....

AFAIK, the city that he works in does require each plumber to be licensed instead of just the entire business.

But, I agree he doesn't need one, but not because his company has one. Simply because one shouldn't need to ask the government permission to do something. It should be up to the people involved in the contract to determine qualifications. Licenses are simply a way to cartelize an industry. When it is harder to get a license, it makes the supply of professionals in this industry lower and therefore increases prices. That's why there is a huge puch to unionize industries and to seek government force to require everyone to be a part of that union.

I am well aware of the problems in the economy. Stop looking at it from the Repugs v. Democrats. That what they want us to look at it as. Divid and concur. The reality is that both sides are part of the same evil corrupt institution and they are all guilty of their destructive policies.

Earmarks are just a minor amount in the grand scheme of things. Of course their solution to earmarks is to let the executive branch determine the earmarks. Yeah, that'll be much better.

Well, Reps are just as guilty at adding earmarks, and I think it is a HUGE problem....$17 BLN in the last budget is not a problem? I wish I had your money, then.....

A line item veto would help whoever we elect as president...and would surely shine line on any "special interests" that a president lets slide through...while most of the earmarks are not visible to the budget process at this time.

A half of a percent of the budget is relatively minor in comparison to the rest of the spending. This whole earmark thing is a diversion to the real issue, which is the overall spending.

Congress is supposed to control the purse strings, not the executive. You let the president do a line item veto, it defeats the purpose of congress determining what money gets spent on. The budget does not get reduced with a line item veto, a line item veto would simply allow the president to cross something off and then spend that money any way they wanted.

Since 2000, the total dollar amount of earmarks is $188.4 BILLION!!!! I am not OK with the out of control spending of Congress on special interests of states with our Federal monies.

Maybe I wasn't clear. The whole budget is a waste, spent for the benefit of corporate interests at our expense. The half a percent that seems to be the major talking point recently is nothing compared to the entire sum of waste that is the budget.

It's a diversion. The Republicans are pushing the earmark issue diverting the minds of those who are fiscally conservative, while they go and funnel funds to their special interests... the military industrial complex, big pharma, wall street, etc.

....or NOT SPEND IT AT ALL!!!! If it is not a vital part of the Federal Government's operational costs, then it should be cut, plain and simple!!!

That's not how earmarks work. The budget is made, then the earmarks are simply telling the executive how the appropriations in the budget must be spent. Allowing a line item veto is simply freeing up that portion of the budget to be spent any way the executive wants. It'd be smarter to have rules to prevent the massive budgets to begin with.

So you think tackling the WHOLE system will get a change, rather than taking the first proverbial bite out of the problem?

I would venture it would be best to attack the issue in manageable sub-parts that can be changed immediately.

Otherwise, you'd have us just stand on the sideline and sound a little wacky in my opinion) by saying "scrap the whole thing," which has an even less likelier chance of happening.

I do recall very recently that the Dems (who are in the majority) have passed a $700 Billion bailout of the same BIG business, pharma companies you are lambasting right now. What of the additional $300 BILLION that Pelosi is calling for additionally?

It should be up to the people involved in the contract to determine qualifications. Licenses are simply a way to cartelize an industry.I thought of them as also a way for people involved in a contract to determine a level of qualifications. How would they do this otherwise? In an unregulated market, how could a potential client get reliable information about the past performance of a contractor? Believe the contractor?

I think there aren't any Joe Biden threads because he's boring. Not that boring is necessarily a bad thing. If it were Biden vs. Palin for President, I don't think it would be much of a contest.

I still like the idea that a guy like Joe the Plumber can be President. If he wants. That's not to say Joe the Plumber is ready to be President *tomorrow*, just that the post is attainable. So the options are:
1. One organization certifies people. You can criticize, and lawyers may go after those who don't meet standards.
2. Many organization that certify people. You can criticize, and lawyers may go after those who do not meet standards. Further, the consumer can choose from many certification organizations.

This nation in general is so afraid of big change a real person for change (Ron Paul) doesn't have a chance. So it takes a much deluted dem to have a chance. This whole country is lame. Everything will always be about money, that's why your car doesn't last long before needs repairs, that's why your laptop will be outdated in an average of 3 months. It's why electric cars aren't everywhere, the oil companies bought up the patents. Money runs everything and makes the people with a lot of corrupt. This world will be a better place from my perspective when i'm dead and I don't have to deal with all this evil that's everyone. But people are too blind to see it. "It's just the way it is" or you're use to it. I hate paying for gas when I know I could be plugging in my car (electric car) at night and run it all day. Paying just for the electricity. I hate paying for groceries at so high of cost since gas for the transportation is too high. I hate the federal reserve, that even if you take every single dollar owned by ALL americans it still wouldn't pay off what he have borrowed. This country sucks, but the rest of the world isn't much better off. We need a clean slate. WW3, global nuclear winter and we can start over millions of years later.

It's rad when you find out you're ok with dying. I suppose I can enjoy watching a global collapse. At least I'll get the benefit of telling all the arrogant republicans (and some dems), told you so.

Btw... If I am wrong, please throw it in my face. I WANT to be wrong. If i'm wrong the world is fine. but keep in mind, if you are wrong. Then the USA is a horrible, false flagging, country and the world is gone.

Btw... If I am wrong, please throw it in my face. I WANT to be wrong. If i'm wrong the world is fine. but keep in mind, if you are wrong. Then the USA is a horrible, false flagging, country and the world is gone.

this nation in general is so afraid of big change a real person for change (ron paul) doesn't have a chance.

What you need is to go live in a third-world country for a few weeks because you don't seem to have an objective idea of what you've got. How about Afghanistan?

Sure the world is imperfect. It's never going to be perfect. But those of us who would rather do something positive rather than suicide could use more constructive criticism rather than so much bitching. Do you plan to vote? It's a start. I'm mailing mine today. :)

I still like the idea that a guy like Joe the Plumber can be President. If he wants. That's not to say Joe the Plumber is ready to be President *tomorrow*, just that the post is attainable. I also respect Joe for not telling who he's going to vote for (he said that's between him and the button). Even if it's just to keep the press away from him. I respect him for that too.

Do you think Joe the Plumber has a good shot at being President because he's corrupt? And his corruption has been widely publicized? That seems to make McCain a viable candidate.

So,
Here's the scenario: The president is under anesthesia while a dentist prods one of his molars (or maybe he's flying in Airforce One and weather conditions have affected the planes communication system). A doomsday scenario unfolds in the Middle East involving a suicide bomber, a US military installment and foreign diplomats, immediate action is required--- Who's your best pick: Senator Joe Biden or Gov. Sarah Palin?

In the last 8 years, decision making power was transferred to Vice President Dick Cheney multiple times under similar circumstances. Most notably on September 11, 2001; during the terrorist attacks, the President had lost communication with the White House while flying to a secure location. Amidst the confusion in the chain of command, and not knowing the full extent of the situation, Vice President Cheney authorized (http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9C0CE3DA1739F93BA25755C0A9629C8B63&sec=&spon=&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink) the US military to shoot down civilian airliners. Shortly thereafter communication was reestablished with the President. Would you give this power to Sarah Palin (http://www.unicyclist.com/forums/showthread.php?t=73748)? Seriously?

I'm unclear on exactly what power you're referring to. The power to reestablish communication with the president? The power to choose my last meal? The power to shoot down civilian airliners?

Who's your best pick: Senator Joe Biden or Gov. Sarah Palin?Duh. But why did you include all that extraneous stuff about Air Force One and all? :)

On 9/11/01, shooting down a civilian airliner may have been a correct worst-case choice to make, depending on the circumstances. The White House probably had less people in it than Flight 93, but the Capitol? Tough choices. No matter which way one decided, it could look horribly wrong.

Your point is well received; the first and the last question, but in reverse order punctuated by the remaining question. I should have linked "Seriously?" instead.

Duh. But why did you include all that extraneous stuff about Air Force One and all?

Filler/packing peanuts.

And that's likely true given the situation. The drawn out conclusion would show that Vice President Cheney had to immediately cite factors such as the appropriate military response, rules surrounding the chain-of-command, legal authority of the executive office, contingencies guiding the military, followup procedures, the underestimation or overestimation of intelligence reports...

I think the elusiveness of Joe Biden threads speaks to his policy expertise by way of this absence.

What if I change the hypothetical: The President is incapacitated and there's a moose loose in the house. Who's your best pick: Senator Joe Biden or Gov. Sarah Palin?

Greg, prior to the 2000 election there was not a single Cheney or Gore thread started. Prior to the 2004 election there was not a single Edwards started. (There were Cheney threads started, but we had gotten to know him.)

I'm not really sure to which demographic you are referring, but I would suggest that run of the mill male politicians with careers based largely on making their bases happy don't rile people up.

Palin is an unexpected novelty and as such a thread magnet.

BTW, forgive me for taking you seriously.

Palin is ...a thread magnet.Based on the recent news about the amount of $$ spent on her wardrobe: Thread Magnet is an appropriate term.

I also heard Hillary's pantsuits run $6,000+ each!

Edit: Now watch this thread jack turn this into a Palin thread rather than Biden.

It would be interesting to do a comparison of Biden-mentions in your mainstream press compared to Palin-mentions.

Or we could just do this (http://www.googlefight.com/index.php?lang=en_GB&word1=palin&word2=biden).

That is not the result I expected. I figured that Biden's career in the Senate would have given him more hits that Palin.

But that google fight is also catching the mentions of Michael Palin (of Monty Python) and other Palins. However, even restricting the google fight to Sarah-Palin and Joe-Biden (http://www.googlefight.com/index.php?lang=en_GB&word1=sarah-palin&word2=joe-biden) results in a big Palin win. Weird.
