But a string was not used, it was a dowell, about 1/2". If a rider trys to jump
over the string and takes the string with him, the stands will be pulled toward
the rider, possibly giving him a nasty whack.

I though the dowell worked very well (is that what Andy means by "string?"), and
the only worry Bill had was that a rider might land off balance and fall against
one of the stands and get hurt on the nails. Nails were set at 1" increments to
hold the dowell.
