View Full Version : Do you support Atheists ban on teaching about imaginary numbers?

BillyTheMountain

Imaginary numbers were defined in 1572 by Rafael Bombelli, a very religious man of great faith.

At the time, like GOD, some thought such numbers did not exist, much as zero and the negative numbers were regarded by some as fictitious.

Atheist mathematicians were slow to believe in imaginary numbers at first, including Descartes who wrote about them in his La Géométrie, where the term was meant to be derogatory. Nevertheless, over time many mathematicians were converted, and their faith in these numbers grew strong!

The gateway drug theory is the hypothesis that the use of soft drugs leads to a higher, future risk of hard drug use.

Atheists have proposed the gateway faith theory, the hypothesis that the belief in imaginary numbers and such leads to a higher, future risk of religiosity.

As a consequence, the Atheists are calling for school systems to BAN the mention of imaginary numbers in public school math classes.

How strong is your faith in the existence of imaginary numbers?

Do you support Atheists ban on teaching about imaginary numbers?

It clearly depends on the ramifications.

What my children want as their allowances is an imaginary number. If imaginary numbers are banned, does that mean they have to quit asking or do I have to give them what they want?

Perhaps the real question is whether there should be a ban on threads about imaginary issues.

They are basically nature's tanks.

I also saw a documentary on turtles, I believe the ones shown in the documentary were 13-19 years old, and in the documentary it showed how these turtles are actually quite strong and good at fighting the likes of ninjas. They also loved to eat pizza if I remember correctly, and I can relate to that. It shed a whole new light on how amazing turtles actually are.

Boring fact: In electronics we don’t use imaginary numbers, because “i” get’s confused with “I”. “I” represents current in electronics. Instead we call them j-factors or “j”.

When I switched from Electronics to teaching math, boy was I in for a shock.

I’m not sure if I believe in the existence of turtles; they sound like something somebody made up.

Essentially, an imaginary number is a number in the form "a + b*i", where 'a' and 'b' are some real numbers and 'i' is the equivalent of sqrt(-1). That's a very very limited definition, but I'm assuming you haven't learned about complex numbers in your level of math yet.

An imaginary number is the money you ow me. It is a reflection of your respect for me, record keeping, and your honesty.

A real number is the money you have, or the trust you ascribe to me to pay my debts to you.

The idea that plus or minus numbers can be linked to religion or atheism is an interesting thread concept from Billy, but it was actually the Arabs who came up with a "not screwy" math system we use today:) .

Imaginary numbers, i or j = sqrt(-1), exist and are useful in some mathematical operations. A rudimentary explanation is available in Wikipedia from where Billy seems to have copied a chunk of his first post. I suppose it is sort of funny to tease atheists in the way he is doing, but it is a feeble effort.

For anyone with the time to read a few screens of text, there is an excellent discussion of the existence of imaginary or complex numbers at

http://www.math.toronto.edu/mathnet/answers/imaginary.html

You will not, in contrast, find any credible arguments for the existence of imaginary beings anywhere on the web.

Billy, Billy, Billy. As you know, atheists thrive on reason.

To be precise, no person or group of persons THRIVE on reason alone. Logicians are good at it. Sceptics try to make such a claim as well. But sceptics come from all religious faiths and agnostics as well, as do logicians.

There is nothing inherent in Atheism that commands them to place reason above all other GODS.

The only doctrine of Atheism is the faith that there is NO GOD.

unifreak7
2008-10-05, 05:38 AM
This makes atheists look bad.

Math and religon to me are too far apart for a small aspect in one to lead to a large aspect in another.

Religon is good. I wouldn't ever follow any of it. But in general it teaches kids morals. If they later grow up and follow something else, usually those morals still transfer with them. Basically saying atheists shouldn't care if non-believers become believers. Same thing for believers shouldn't care if believers come non-believers.

Just a side line question for the religon folk. What does your faith say about dark energy?

p.s. Billy if you would like to talk more in depth about something like this p.m. me and I can check back on this more. Since too many people will say useless things about topics like this. I think most people just don't care to thnk about anything going on around them.

Some people actually believe God is imaginary but is used to connect squares with their roots.

This may be one of the funniest posts on the thread.
That doesn't contain the word TURTLES.

If not GOD, what connects squares with their roots?

34 people voted in this poll.

The overwhelming majority believe in imaginary numbers and support the teachings of imaginary numbers.

The Atheists lose, and imaginary numbers will continue to be taught.

Apparently Billy you don't have much faith in yourself. You set this poll to close in March 2009, but are declaring victory 6 months prematurely.

Romans 14:22
"Hast thou faith? Have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth."

When the numbers look this bad, even a presidential candidate may concede before the polls close on the West coast.

Any Atheists up for making the concessions speech?

You should read this somewhat sobering New Yorker piece, The Hardest Vote (http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2008/10/13/081013fa_fact_packer).

Sure, in March 2009, when YOU set this poll to close.

I dunno, don't ya think these Atheists might have something here?
