high jump

Hello everybody!

I read about the high jump competition at the last NUC. As this competition is
not mentioned at the IUF rule book, I wonder if anyone can submit some rules.
I'm especially interested in the following questions: Are you hopping up a stair
or over any kind of batten? How many attempts does one have? Can it be compared
to 'normal' pedestrian high jump? Is dismounting allowed when coming down, or is
it compulsory to keep riding the uni after hopping?

There isn't any stair climbing involved.

Two attempts per each height level

Yes, I believe the rules are the same as those used in track high jump.

Dismounting counts as a missed attempt at the current height, whether the bar
was cleared or not.

The height hopping competition at 1995 NUC was the first time height hopping was
done (that I know of) at a NUC. My former roommate (Bill Karbo) came up with the
idea and built the contraption. I helped some with the rules but he did the bulk
of the work. The Height Hopping competition was a success. There were long lines
to try it. It would be fun to have it at Unicon (somebody local would have to
make the contraption).

The contraption used is much like the high jump. Two stands on both side with
string resting on pegs a set height. The string can easily be knocked off if a
rider hits it. The pegs are at set intervals (we used english measurements and
later converted it metric, any future height hopping competition the pegs would
be in metric). If a rider hits the string dead on, the stands will fall inwards.
This was found to be the safest way to handle falls. Nobody got hurt doing this
event during the 1995 NUC.

The rules (from memory) are: The rider has to be able to ride up and ride away
from each jump (this prevents someone going in with fixed wheel or pogo stick)

The rider has two attempts at each height. If the rider does not make it on
either attempt then the next previous completed height is what is recorded as
the maximum height for that rider.

The rider can take the seat out in front if so desired.

Bouncing before the jump is acceptable.

Knee pads and gloves are mandatory.

I have the 'offical' rules we used somewhere at home. If you are interested
further I can dig them up and post them.
