I still can't get it. I can get into the position, but when I jump I just can't spin the unicycle or get my legs out. Also, I always fall back, like I just jump back off the uni. Any help would be greatly appreciated.:)

Same.

People just say practice.

I think possibly you are falling backwards because you are scared of landing on the pedals / cranks. Once you commit to one attempt the fear will probably disappear and you will get the trick soon after that. Are you sure you are using the correct hand positioning to spin the uni?
Check out this video if you havent already - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFCHDO1umlM
Try to get the spin down perfect before you try to land on the unicycle.
Thats about all I can think of for now, apart from just go out and do it!

Yeah my hands are in the right position, I think I might not be jumping high enough, is that a possibility?

I just got the 180 unispin today! Anyway, try hopping higher and vertical, and if you normally get one foot back on the pedals, you might want to try it on cement, like a garage floor, to bounce higher. It is much kinder on your elbows when you fall than asphalt! Make sure you are wearing a helmet and have 661's, if you don't already.

If anyone in this thread is still having trouble why dont you post a video of your attempts and we might be able to see what you are doing wrong?

I'll try that, see if we still have a video camera laying around.

When you're jumping you need to concentrate on the events you need to do. Jump higher, spin faster, and most importantly snap your feet in. If you keep thinking about all three of those you'll get it in no time. Just keep pushing for it harder each try. Always snap your feet as fast as you can. Don't be afraid to stick over the unicycle, you won't get injured beyond a few minutes of sitting down. It's all about commitment.

I have the same prob. like wen I jump I don't land on the pedals I just land on the ground and wen I really go for it I get bloody legs and I can't afford shin guards. I can't seem to jump high enough? I still try every day but man It seems hopeless

Ok I went out this morning and got both feet on but fell back:mad: I can usually get one foot on or hit the pedals at least but I still land with my feet out somtimes, but at least I'm over the uni more. So I guess this is progress even though my legs just look horrible:D

I realize the correct response is "whatever works for you" but I'm curious if others have found the direction you spin the uni to be easier one way or the other.

For instance, I hop with my right foot back and have been trying to 180 counter-clockwise using my left hand; my thinking being that my back foot coming around first would make a better target. But I noticed in the tutorial posted to this site he spins clockwise with his right hand, right foot back.

Anybody have a preference?

I spin clockwise and hop right foot forward, but my friend hops left foot forward and spins clockwise, too. Whatever works for you!

I have a little question: do you actually have to hop and spin, or just spin while your wheel stays on the ground?

generally you will want to hop and spin. although it is possible to spin with the wheel still on the ground

Any videos yet guys?

I think you should do the way you do better

Now I can do the 180 mount. But when I try the actual unispin I happen to either jump backwards or move the uni away from me...

What really helped me alot was not watching my feet. Try looking a few feet in front of your uni when you spin and concentrate on bringing your feet back to the middle of the wheel (landing on the cranks). Don't know if this will work for everyone, but its what got me to stop being afraid of landing with one foot and causing a pedal bite.

May I suggest some 661's? (or shinguards, whatever). But I do have my fair share of bruises on the back of my left leg (calf) because mine don't have hard plastic protection on the back, just cloth. Remember: keep practicing and you will land it.

well on the topic of 180s...

After recording myself trying to do a 180 unispin the only thing stopping me from landing it is psychological...

I don't know how I'm going to get around that. I can't seem to force my legs inward...

Oh well. I’ll just keep trying. Maybe it’ll come to me in my sleep. ;)

Video it. your animation didnt work for me
Edit: judging by your picture you have the same problem that I'm having with 5 spins. do you sometimes land on with your right foot and not your left? If so, it's all about commitment and getting that left leg to obey master brain up there

I recently learned 180 unispins.

I found it hard when I first tried to learn them. So I stopped trying for a long time.

My original skills I had and though I needed were

Jump mount.
180 Jump mount.

For me the skills that finally helped me was.

Jump mount - High. Like try to jump, lifting my legs as high as possible.
No Footer - Not just a standard no footer but high.
(These skills also helped me with getting the confidence)

Jump mount to wheel hoping
90 degree jump mount to wheel hoping from seat out in front position

One of the final things that helped me the other week was realising that I jumped and spun the unicycle anticlockwise when doing wheel hopping. While unispinning i was trying to spin clockwise. When I corrected this, I got it within 3 attempts. Even then, once I landed a few unispins I worked on spinning clockwise to wheel hopping and was getting unispins clockwise as well.

As with what most people are saying. Wear guards, practice the individual skills and really go for the skills and you'll get it.

How do you fix over rotation? When I try to put my feet in they hit the tire on the 3/4 rotation.

ya same i landed mine today to but, up todayi was always just geting 1 foot on my back foot so then all you have to do is watch the front one and just focus on landing on that one because my back foot always gets on.
If you are not jumping high enough and falling back ( and that was what i was doing) then focus on keeping the uni on the ground because then there will be more room fom your jump and it wont slip out, and one more thing i know you need asweres to what you are doing wrong but i dont think sitting on the computer is going to make you a much better 180 unispin

I found that out myself and just try alot of different things, and dont get mad.

Well dont try and whip the unicycle super fast because then you cant really see the pedals/cranks and 2 because of the of rotation and if you are finding to hard to keep it slow, you say you get a 3/4 rotation? then go for the other 1/4 as long as the uni is still under you , i dont advise that but then you can say the learned th 360 spin before the 180.

Kk what I did was learn suicide mount which is were you have the uni in from of you and the jump onto the unicycle just have it in front of you then let go and jump on it after that practice no footers and the just spin the uni but don't land it after that you got it so have fun and GL

I've seen some really high seats in videos of 180 unispins and i'm not sure if this affects the trick?
Just wondering is a low seat a disadvantage when learning to 180 unispin?
I'm too sore and tired to go try unispins with a higher seat today..

I would say yes, a higher seat is better for unispins...
My reasoning is: You are able to keep more upright, therefore being in a more 'natural' position to land.
If your seat is down you will be crouching further and more likely to lose alignment with the uni after initiating the spin.
Try with your seat up a inch or 2, i think you'll find it'll help!
I found it did anyway :D

I can now 180 unispin.
Ill tell you how later but ill give you some background.
I practised for hours each day with shin pads (front and back) on my 20" Qu-ax muni doing jump mounts and 180 jump mounts until they were completely solid. In between practising these I would try 180s on grass but would never get more than my right foot brushing the pedals. I'd seen all the videos and read all the tutorials and tried and tried to commit but id just never make it; i am not the type to fluke tricks. I became extremely annoyed and stopped for a while to learn to 1ft ww and glide.
In our area we have an extended group of friends that ride. One friend who i dont see often learnt to ride extremely quickly and i knew when he got his torker 16" (He's quite small). He bought it for around $200. A few weeks later i was surprised to find that he could unispin.
Today i saw the 16" for the first time and i had a go. I really liked the weight. He showed me a few unispins and i was hooked to learn. When i jumped hardish i would hit the rim on the ground so i tried to not go too hard on the uni. I had 1 or 2 spins on grass, then landed one. Landed about 5 more on the 16". It was so easy. Tried it on my 20. Failed a few times. Did a few more on the 16". Went to the 20. Got it on like my 2nd try. I did not have leg guards on all this day.
I can now consistantly 180 unispin on my quax, landing on the cranks. I will aim for the pedals tomorrow as i am too exhausted today.
I am looking into getting an ebay 16" and fitting it with a high pressure bmx tube (any recommendations) and probabaly a stronger 16" later.

Random: Does anyone know what a 180 unispin with a back crank flip is?
I have been calling it a hick-back?

This is my unispinning story. I hope it helps.

EDIT: Any idea where i can get a cheap 16" in Aus? Oz-auctions/crazysales who i got my previous learner from only sell down to 18"s. I dont want to spend a lot of money importing or buying from a bike shop atm.

Try no-footers.

I never did this because I landed my first 180 unispin while I was goofing off.

(just goes to show things can happen while goofing off:))

In my opinion, no-footers would help because they get your foot motion down, and when your foot motion is down, spinning the uni is easy.

I find when I attempt 360 unispins (I'm really close) it's not the spinning that is hard, is not being able to spin because my legs aren't far out enough.

Good luck. Dedicate 2 more hours of serious work, and I bet you get it.

petad
2008-11-02, 04:44 PM
I wouldn't spend time on no-footers, I never did. At least for me, when I do no-footers, I bring my legs up, instead of out like you need to do for unispins. But if it helps, do it. And don't focus only on the angle your legs go out at, the height you hop over the uni is equally important.

And yes, a 180 unispin with a back(crannk)flip is normally called a hickback
