View Full Version : Emo vs. Punk, (Emo Isn't Punk)

Well, 1wheeledgrape said there are other threads. Heres mine.
Okay, wikipedia is discredited for some of their knowledge, our schools say nothings true in there, but some things are.
Saying Emo is a subgenre of punk, is like saying that, dont get me wrong, 'the fundinmentalist mormans' is a sub religion of Mormanism. It arguably is, but I know some (maybe a lot) of mormans HATE being associated with them. Its an extremist group of a normal group of people.
I hate when someone refers to music i listen to as emo. I listen to punk. People have to learn what emo means, and from the artists i listen to, i doubt their emo.
I mean, some 'emo'ish music can be good, but i dont like my music being associated with them. Emo people, in my opinion, have many many self inflicted problems that they blame on other people. You never see an emo person saying, 'i'm sad that my boyfriend left me, becuase i cheated on him with his enemy blatantly, and now i'm cutting for that reason'.
I mean, i know a few people who do cut a little, but i've known em longer than that.
emo music DOES NOT EQUAL punk.

Emo -

i dont mean to offend anyone, anyway. I'm just trying to state i dont like my music being associated blatantly with emo music. I also dont mean to offend religiously, i'm not racist, sexist, specieist, or anything, i'm a libertarian, left field liberal. Do what you want, be who you feel free to be, no ones holding you back, if you have a problem with someone, dont listen to their crap.

'Hell yeah' is kind of unnecessary. Putting emo up to ANYTHING is like making a premature baby fend off a fighting dog.

The music style or the so-called "life style"?
Music: emo
The way you act/dress/whatever: Neither. (but definitly not emo.)

I like rock. Too bad neither of these are deserving enough to be put into the 'Rock and Roll' category.

Fact: Most emos are bisexual because they think that when your a emo, its the "norm".

Why does it matter how other people classify what music you like? Why do you care if someone calls you emo? Why is that offensive? Is there something wrong with being emo that you would take offense at being called such?
Emo v. Punk? Two sides of the same coin. It's all music. Listen to what you enjoy, regardless of who puts what label on what band.
Fact: Unicycling is the ultimate non-conformist sport. Which = punk.
Aren't you by trying to be a non-conformist, conforming to the ideals of being non-conformist? Who cares if unicycle is "punk"?
I stopped trying years ago to categorize the music I listen to. I just listen to what I like. I think its stupid to refrain from listening to a certain group because they don't fit into your "musical identity" as a "punk," "emo," or some other bullshit arbitrary label.

thats what i'm saying when i said, some of the music i listen to is emoish. (hehe... emoish = amish), I listen to a lot of stuff. I listen to GD, White stripes, gorillaz, the clash, the ramones, the presidents of the united states of america, U2, weezer, Foxboro Hot Tubs, Pinhead gunpowder. A lot of different styles, but i dont like it when someone will take Green day, and call them emo. A large majority of their fans have conformed themselves to being emo, and consider green day emo sorta. Green day is punk, they were punk, and they always were. I can argue all day about GD, i know a lot of their history.

Dam 1000 posts... I kinda don't wanna ruin it lol. O'well.
Unicycling isn't normal. Its diffrent, there for it is a non conforming sport. I don't try to be a non-conformist, I just am one. Whats normal to me isn't normal to others, therefor to a third party view I am considered a non-conformist.
Also, I think your missing the point of the thread. I already said I don't mind emo music, but I hear alot of songs and don't like them and think hmmmm... I don't like this, it sounds a little too emo.

Alright, you want a real answer?
Emo, short for Emotional Hardcore, came from hardcore, which has its roots in punk and metal. Just because you don't want it to be true, does not mean it isn't. Also remember that all punk is not the same. Take Black Flag vs Sum 41 and Blink 182. (hardcore punk vs pop punk) Emo and Pop Punk are very close.
Rock and roll came from blues. Are they the same? Of course not. THE FACT is that Emo came from the punk/hardcore genre. There is no arguing this. Are they the same? No more than you and your Dad are the same person.
Also, Manson is METAL and if you want to narrow it down further he's shock metal mixed with Goth/Glam (think of the band Orgy.) Manson NEVER has been ANYTHING close to Emo.
Emo, for the record, has splintered into many sub genres and merged partially with Nu Metal to form weird hybird bands like My Chemical Romance (and Good Charlotte, ugh, before them) which sound nothing like the roots of emo. (Dashboard Confessional and Bright Eyes, for example.)
Also, there has been a joining of Goth and Emo, two completely separate genres that have come together thanks, in part, to Jared Letto and 30 seconds to Mars. He dresses Goth and makes Emo music. Emo kids, traditionally, have worn sweaters and other stupid crap like that. They DON'T look like Manson. I suppose we can blame Jared Letto for you getting mixed up.
Remember, just because you don't want something to be true doesn't mean it's not. Also remember that the the emo genre evolved when you were about 8, so you should take our word on it. We SAW it happen. (with disgust)

I saw it more as an invading army of suck. It was the response to the spice girls and boy bands of the late 90's that I'd been waiting for for soo long, but is sucked just as bad. It was supposed to be our savior, a good metal/rock backlash with decent bands and lyrics, but instead it was this ovary filled mush. It was the epitome of out of the frying pan into the fire. At least the Spice Girls and Britney Spears were hot. We could watch MTV on mute. With emo there was nothing redeeming. For a second we thought we had our saviors in Limp Biskit and a reborn Korn, but they both pussed out.
We were expecting a Cobain, Alice in Chains, or Soundgarden to come save us from pop like they saved us from hair metal, or at the very least a Pantera-esq sub genre to re-appear. But we got nothing but more crap carried into the spotlight by youth too afraid to mosh.
And now it's just worse. The genre has corrupted Goth and Nu Metal. Now people can't even tell Goth and Emo apart anymore. Even bands that had early promise like Linkin Park got pulled down. Hell, they even got their dirty little ovaries into Green Day. What happened to Dookie? IT WAS KILLED BY OVARIES!

Seager, great posts in here.
The main downside ive been seeing form the whole Emo fad is the mosh pits. The kids and their "Hardcore dance". Basically, trying to be a ninja and swinging their limbs around. I HATE that, and it makes me laugh so hard when I see it happening at a show.
Im pretty oldschool with my moshing. Its brutal, there are no moves with names, its just tons of guys, running into eachother, pushing, pulling, some falling (but everybody helps you right up, thats the main priority. Someone falls, get them up so they dont get trampled). At the end of the show, youre sweaty, everyone else is sweaty, heart is pounding, youre bruised, maybe bloody, no voice from cheering/screaming on the band. You get the point. Crowdsurfing is amazing too. I got the chance to crowdsurf a guy in a wheelchair. That was a highlight of a concert.
But now, people just stand there, mainly texting on their cellphones, there is a tiny circle with a few kids dancing, and thats it.
Its also changed the local thrash, hardcore, black, death, ect, metal bands here.
Makes it hard for a instrumental prog metal/rock band to get shows or attention.:o

Core.
While emo was still the genre of dashboard confessional, and I was in elementary school, the only core I ever heard was hardcore. As emo started to become what it is now, I saw more genres of core. Emocore, ect, youve probably seen them all.
And it was those bands where I started to see hardcore dance catch on.
Its just ridiculous to me. A ve (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_ehZcYFCz8&feature=related)ry easy way to make me laugh though.

I always figured kids who hardcore danced just did it so that no one would get near enough to touch them in a mosh pit. They're afraid of a little bump so they swing their arms around like a crazy porcupine.

black flag - rise above? Goldfinger - not amused, Green Day - platypus, or Take Back. Uh... FOD starts out acoustic, then goes into a little more heavier stuff....
Goldfinger - Free Kevin Kjonaas (either version will do, theres one thats acoustic, from a few years ago, then theres the remake off Hello Destiny)
Goldfinger - Get Up, although thats more pop sorta
The Ramones - Pinhead
The Ramones - ahh cant think of the name of it right now..

I wear sweaters. I have three. In fact, I love my sweaters, as they are very warm and fuzzy. I bought two of them at thrift stores. I don't get much use out of them in the Texas climate, though :(
Geez, I guess my sweaters make me emo. Especially since I bought all but one at a thrift store. Yeah, and two of them have thick stripes. I guess I must be hardcore emo. Or maybe I just like to stay warm when its cold out.

That's Goth, NOT EMO. At least not original emo, now the Goth/Emo crowd as mixed into this crappy hybrid that's worse than them both.
Manson and his Goth fans were around 10 YEARS BEFORE EMO EVEN EXISTED. Emo was brand new around 2001. You can't use it to describe trends from before that time. It's incorrect!
Just because emo kids listen to him now doesn't mean he's ever identified as emo. Emo kids nowadays listen to goth, emo, metal, hardcore just like they always have.
I know a goth kids (yes, they do still exist, weird eh?) who listens to the beach boys sometimes. Does that make the beach boys goth?
I hate playing the age card, but you trying to be the expert on this would be like me trying to be the expert on 70's disco. I just wasn't around then, so I don't pretend to know more about it than people who were.

Emo was used to describe Embrace and Rites of Spring even though they thought the term was stupid. If you want to be correct, Emo predates Manson since it relates to Revolution Summer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revolution_Summer). Bands like Embrace, Rites of Spring, Moss Icon, Fugazi, and Rain defined a new form of music, which I guess over the last 20 years has taken many forms.
Basically...just listen to Rites of Spring or Fugazi first and see what you think. As a matter of fact, I'm gonna go listen to Rites of Spring right now.

Emo was brand new around 2001. You can't use it to describe trends from before that time. It's incorrect!
I don't follow your logic.
I was simply proving the fact that "emo" was first used to describe a set of bands in the 80s, and therefore it is entirely correct to use it to describe trends before 2001.
In a more modern sense...what about Jawbreaker or Elliott Smith or Sunny Day Real Estate? They were all around before 2000 and that term was being thrown around at those bands quite a lot.

Just wanted to say body modification ( cutting or piercing and blah blah) is not only emo kids. There are many perfectly happy people who cut for reasons other than being depressed since you have it too good and don't know it. I'm very interested in body modification, scarring done by cutting, piercing and suspension to be specific, and I'm not emo at all. For many it's more of a celebration of life and not a sad attempt at running from your problems.... Just thought I'd let y'all know.

oh, If were talking body modification, then thats not what i'm talking about. I'm talking wrist cutting. i actually have met this person (http://www.unicyclist.com/forums/member.php?find=lastposter&t=61043) one or two times, i find nothing wrong with it. You know lots of emo's do things other than their wrists though? From what I know and have heard many do it in places that are not visible. So 'emo cutters' might do it on their legs instead. From what I know not to many people actually do cut their wrists, I could be wrong though, I don't know to many emo kids.

I see what your saying. I would argue that emo in the 80's context meant something different than emo in current context. Same word, different meanings. As for the bands you mentioned, they were pioneers in the new emo genre (although I don't know if Eliot Smith fits) - and you're right, they were around before 2000. What I meant was that emo was not mainstream by any means before 2000. Manson was mainstream 10 years earlier, around even earlier than that, and clearly was/is not emo.
I had simplified my argument for unibike's sake - what I meant by "No emo before 2000" was "No emo in the current mainstream sense of the word (not the 80's sense) was predominate or mainstream before 2000."
That all being said, I'd listen to a persuasive argument about 80's emo being similar to if not pioneering late 90's early 2000 punk derived emo. It's something that I think you have a better grasp of than I do. Assuming we both agree that it's a bit silly to call Manson emo. :)
not really... hahaha... Still, in my opinion, emo has ALWAYS been pussy cutter kids. Listen to Chris, Real emo kids dont care enough to get dressed or do anything.
Some goths cut. Some emos cut. Some just plain depressed kids cut. Some jocks and cheerleaders cut. It doesn't belong to anyone. You can't make a blanket statement about them.
Manson was and is not Emo. The music is different, the fans were different. Goth != Emo. I know to you they are all the same and it's easier for you to call them all emo, but you can't just change the meaning of a word like that.

Lol, you should have linked him to a fail site.
Punk music is awesome. I have no problem with emo music either. But.... EMOS PISS ME OFF. Especially the stupid spoilt ones with all their fancy clothes and acsessories that their apparent "unloving" parents buy them.
Fact: Most emos are bisexual because they think that when your a emo, its the "norm".
Fact: No emo has ever commited suicide.
Fact: Unicycling is the ultimate non-conformist sport. Which = punk.
I hate that I always get involved in these conversations. You are being extremely ignorant. Take this sentence for example "EMOS PISS ME OFF. Especially the stupid spoilt ones with all their fancy clothes and acsessories that their apparent "unloving" parents buy them."... Ok!! Lets generalize. All blacks are stupid niggers, gays are butt fucking faggots, and mexicans are sweaty and unclean (none of that is true but thats what you are suggesting about emos). Ok, even if its not such a large group of people as a race, its still being different (Just like being punk, prep, etc..) You really obviously have met some bad "emos" or whatever you want to call it, because "theyre" not all that. Not that there isnt that group. I have someone in my immediate family who is "ub3r gay emo" (as you might say), he had his girlfriend have sex with his best friend, got laid off of his job, and alot of other things happen within about a two month period. He tried to kill himself. People kill themselves based on emotions (I assume, correct me if you think Im wrong) not on their style, or clique.
To even suggest that all emos are bi-sexual is just stupid. That goes with all black people steal tvs and rape innocent women (pardon, just giving an example). I know dozens of "emo" people and none of them are bi-sexual. You obviously take what you read on the internet very seriously. Thats a ridiculous generalization.
"Fact: No emo has ever commited suicide." You are just being stupid here. People of all kinds kill themselves as sad as that might be. Even if you know a few emo kids who cut, whos to say that they wont kill themselves. All in all, you are obviously very stupid and ignorant. Its pathetic that you stereotype with such intensity.
"Fact: Unicycling is the ultimate non-conformist sport. Which = punk" Sweet?

oooooooooh kay.
Were not talking depressed people here. Theres a lot of those in the world, thats what i'm guessing your talking about. Peoples lives who are ACTUALLY shit, and have to deal with it.
were talking about the EMO people, who wear black clothes, cut their wrists, have black hair flipped to the side, white makeup, and clothes that their UNLOVING parents bought them. They're contridicting, self incriminating folk. An actual Depressed/Emo person, like chris said, wouldnt even get dressed.
not the ACTUALLY depressed people, just the kids that say their life sucks, and that they should kill themselves. (i dont know if their parents have remarried or what, so i put parrent(s))
Both of these are true for me -
I know a person who's dad commited suicide. The kids are TOTALLY FINE. They're active in sports. Love Parent(s)
I know a person who's dad died in a car crash. The kids EMO. Thinks his parent(s) hate him, yet wears over $100 emo jeans, like a $200 sweatshirt, and has like a $70 emo haircut.
Some people just have mental problems.

You're mistakenly correlating internal emotions and external expressions. One may not be symptomatic of the other. Some people just like to play dress-up.
You seem to be incredibly obsessed with pictures of young boys wearing makeup. Perhaps there is some repressed homosexuality locked up inside that obsession. Perhaps not. Just throwing that out there.
Your rant tells us more about you than about the subject you're trying to express.

Punk IS NOT Emo.
MUSIC STYLE, NOT LIFESTYLE.
I didn't read through the thread but I probably know whats being said.
You guys need a history lesson.
Emo began in the summer of '85 in washington DC (revolution summer). (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revolution_Summer) All the guys who were in the OG emo bands were in hardcore/punk bands also. the most obvious being Ian McKaye of Minor Threat starting the emo band Embrace. Listen to any Revolution Summer band, like Embrace, Rites Of Spring, Moss Icon, etc and ty to tell me they are not hardcore/punk bands. All more DIY then any of you guys probably are.
In the early 90's west coast cats began to take notice and spawned bands like Heroin and Indian Summer, which were more chaotic than the east coast bands- this lead to them being labed "screamo."
At the same time bands like Fugazi (Ian McKaye again) were taking them emo sound and adding some indie rock flavor. This lead to the mid 90's emo-indie scene with bands like sunny day real estate, texas is the reason, the appleseed cast, etc. This indie/emo/post rock sound (I wouldn't personally call it emo straight up) is what has been bastardized into modern MTV/radio "emo."
My point is this: EMO IS PUNK, EMO IS A SUBGENRE OF HARDCORE.
Emo as a subgenre is DIY as hell, with most bands releasing 7"s and 12" lps only on labels they started or DIY punk and hardcore labels, unlike some shitty "punk" bands (Sex Pistols? Anti-Flag?). Emo is intertwined and part of the history of punk music, especially that of the DC scene (arguably the best).
Don't talk shit on something you don't really know anything about. Real emo is alive today, with europe pumping out tons of great modern "emo" bands. Check out Yaphett Kotto, Raein, La Quiete, Cease Upon The Capitol, Daitro, etc.
99% of the stuff that gets labeled emo today is in no way, shape, or form legitamte emo or screamo. The stuff that gets airtime on the radio or MTV is usually shitty pop punk with a few metal riffs and a bunch of haircuts.
As for the losers who label themselves "emo," they just want attention- ignore them. Thier fad is just about dead, and when the next bandwagon comes around, they will jump on it. There has always been shitty fad youth cultures, and probably always will be. At the same time some kids who keep jocking the punxxx, saying punk is this and that, emo sucks, you are no better than the "emo" kids you despise. You are probably either a poser living in the middle of bumfuck nowhere or you'll sell out in the next couple of years.

touche.
I'm not saying 'Emo music' sucks. I listen to a few bands, that are labeled emo. MCR, some Linkin Park thats called emo, Metro City Soundtrack (a few weird emo creepy songs, well, one mainly), and a few other various bands like that.
All i was saying to start with, is that there IS, if anything, a very fine line between actual punk, and Emo.
