Wow, I just took a peek at RSU* for the first time in a long, long time and there were so many names I didn't recognize. Who are all those people? [rhetorical question]

What I think of as the online unicyclist community -- meaning the people I see here every day in Just Conversation (JC) -- is only a small fraction. If I posted in RSU today, most of the people there would think I'm a forum newbie.

Does anyone besides me post exclusively in JC? Why?

When you post in RSU, are you more serious? Do you spend more time proofreading and editing?

When you post in JC, do you feel you can "let your hair down?" (as they may or may not say any more...)

Are you reluctant to start a thread in RSU because so much has already been talked about?

Are you tired of talking about the same old unicycle topics? Is that why you are in JC?

Have you ever recommended that an RSU-only poster try JC? Did he or she like it?

Would you like me to stop asking questions? Are you sure?

Actually, I'm hoping someone posts something that will turn this into an interesting thread. Otherwise, plunk! to the bottom like a turd. The catchy title can only go so far.

* - someone always asks, so... "RSU" is Rec.Sport.Unicycling, the main unicycling area of the forum space (which is linked to the eponymous Usenet newsgroup -- a fact that only Klaas might still appreciate)

Does anyone besides me post exclusively in JC? Why?

Not me. I like to check out all parts of the forums, even the trash every now and then. Why? I just like seeing everything that is going on. JC pulls up some interesting threads and discussions, as with RSU, Video section, trading, product review, and the other smaller sections.

When you post in RSU, are you more serious? Do you spend more time proofreading and editing?

Nope. Im the same throughout all the sections here. I do spend some time proofreading, cause I have a bad habit of typing ahve and jsut, and some other small bad habits that happen when I type. I do that in all sections though.

When you post in JC, do you feel you can "let your hair down?" (as they may or may not say any more...)

Hmm, my hair is in a ponytail right now. I guess I can let it down now. :)

Are you reluctant to start a thread in RSU because so much has already been talked about?

A little bit at first, cause even though I search all the time, I may of missed a thread or didn't read through every page of something, and I know someones gonna go "This has already been talked about...", but it doesn't pressure me much at all, just makes me think about it 2 or 3 times before hitting the 'New Thread' button.

Are you tired of talking about the same old unicycle topics? Is that why you are in JC?

Yes, and a little. I used to read every thread on the first page of RSU, but now I don't do that. A lot of the threads just don't interest me now, but there still a few that stand out and I like to read through. Specially when its about new equipment and growth of the sport.

Have you ever recommended that an RSU-only poster try JC? Did he or she like it?

I'm not sure if I have done that, but i've seen others do it. And the people who are on the receiving end usually takes it offensively.

Would you like me to stop asking questions? Are you sure?

Nah, its fine.

I spend the majority of my time in JC because RSU makes me feel poor.

Just Conversation seems to be a little more easy-going than RSU and I feel like I can contribute more to the threads here than the often serious ones in RSU. Other people know more about the technical parts of unicycling than I do, and it's rare that I give any kind of useful advice.

I haven't seen anything new come out of that thing in years. It's always the same ol' "how do i", "do you think that", "which is better", "i got blah dee blah", "i did", etc., etc. If someone posted something new every once in a while there'd be some merit in reading it. Nobody even posts any good ride write-ups anymore.

There are good ride write ups there, but usually they get buried in the crap so fast you never see them if you spend most of your time in JC.

Hi Eric.

With a constant supply of new people who are eager to talk about unicycling, I guess that is bound to happen. Everyone naturally wants to talk and make friends, not just sit around reading old threads. I wonder whether back in late 2002 when I was posting my beginner questions maybe some people were already tired of hearing the same old thing. I think they used to say that Usenet has no memory (new people keep rolling in asking the same questions -- which gave rise to the FAQ). It's all good.

Take a break from RSU for a while and hang out with us here in JC. We hardly see you around any more (unless you are over in RSU, then I wouldn't know).

Edit: Also, to people in general -- you don't get extra credit for answering all the questions. They were just food for thought. :)

Does anyone besides me post exclusively in JC? Why?Gilby seems to post exclusively in JC, because apparently it's his soapbox on political issues.Nobody even posts any good ride write-ups anymore.I was one of them, since I used to have a good audience on here. Judging how the user-base has got a little restless over the past year or so, I've completely lost motivation to do write-ups.

I know of at least one other regular write-up rider who's stopped doing them as well.

Although I can't resist some times, I usually "put on my game face" in RSU. I enjoy sharing what little experience I have with the newbies, especially since a literate and well-composed post is a rarity these days.

As others have noted, the number of thought- or discussion- provoking threads has taken a dive lately, so I don't post there as often as I used to.

When I do get a good idea, accomplish a new skill or find an interesting link, I don't hesitate to start a new thread in RSU. If anything, the flood of inane threads encourages me to post my own when I can.

Just as I won't hand a glass of whiskey to a teetotaler, I'll never recommend JC to anyone. It's an acquired taste, kinda like the Trash Receptacle... but it feels like home to me!

I like that many people let their hair (or baldness) down here. It feels a lot more personal than RSU... it's "all business" there.

I'm an exclusive JC poster, Dave. But I'm getting a little tired of JC these days. It used to be fun. Now the fun is becoming extinct and a new brood of posters is emerging.

Wow, nearly everyone else is absent...
You can't blame 'em.

This place is turning into a veritable Chuck E. Cheese.

You've got screaming brats running about the place, leashless, bumping into your shins at every turn.

You've got to kick two or three out of the way just to get to the Pac Man machine, and even then, they've coated the controls with their snot.

I'm almost ready to take my quarters to another arcade...

Me too, especially since the new arcade has Ms. Pac Man on a card-reader system instead of tokens, all the new bemani, shooters, fighters and racers.

Can't beat that cheap Chuck-E-Cheese beer though... and my favorite band. (http://www.jibjab.com/view/174125)

updates ....
Tmornstar is about to move to Florida, a great loss for the Memphis Unicycle Club.

Memphis Mud is recovering from torn knee ligaments, the result of a MUni wreck. He is on the mend and back to light uni riding.

I've only been here 4 years and I can still remember how much friendlier, funnier, and more interesting JC used to be.

But to answer Dave's original question, I'm almost exclusively JC...I'll lurk on RSU once or twice a week maybe, but I just don't have the knowledge, skills, or experience to answer most questions or take part in most debates.

Unfortunately, that doesn't stop many people, Dude. Some of these kids can't even change their own tires, but they think they're sitting on a stack of Master's Degrees. I've all but given up on RSU...

Im pretty much done with RSU too. I check through the threads and read the ones that interest me, but there hasnt been really new going up there. NAUCC is fun to check up on, and a few others.

In JC I check almost all the threads still, but right now its the kids version of Unicycle for JC. So I mainly stay within MR and a few other threads until the bad ones die down.

I think it may have been over a year since I've even looked in RSU. I just come in here for the friends I have in MR. But even that is getting less and less, but I'm trying to come in here more often.

I do miss those legendary ride write-ups he used to do.
The thread title alone was usually the funniest thing to appear on the forum that week.

I rather stupidly got involved in a recent spat and tried to insist on people being nice about diagreeing.

Man! Am I the antichrist or what?

I have the worst timing for that. Nick comes and makes a post, then I see it and he is offline. :(

Mikefules posts are still some of the best.

Sometimes I will post and then leave.
You can still post to me. After that I will usually intermitently check throughout the day to see if anyones replied to me. But the days where I'll sit down for a while to actually have a conversation are pretty gone. Unless a thon starts up while I happen to be here, I'll stay a tad longer.

<<Blushes>> I'd like to thank everyone who voted for me, I'd like to thank my agent, my mum, my dad, my teachers, my friends, and everyone who has believed in me... (breaks down sobbing).

(Look out for the pictures of me in the news tomorrow in what will become known as "that dress".)

Funny thing is I got out of the habit of writing the ride write ups because they started to seem a bit repetitive and I guessed everyone was getting tired of them.

I've been doing more riding this year than last, so I'll see what I can do.

We havent had a proper thon in ages. I hardly even remember the last one.

Once the ghost pages kicked in, we've hardly had enough content going by to do a postalonathon.
